This article depicts how the benefits of being bilingual are well known: the ability to understand new cultures, express yourself in different ways, as well as giving the brain a great cognitive workout. New research from Lancaster University now shows that those who can speak two or more languages can also see the world differently depending on the language they are using. Linguists there took a group of German and English speakers- some bilingual, other monolingual- and tested their reactions to certain images. The results were fascinating. They found that German speakers are more "holistic" in their approach to seeing and describing the world. English speakers focus far more on the action and very little on the goal of that action. This relates to international relations because it describes the languages of the world.
