"R.D. Pat Mahoney, 73, a retired Air Force Master Sergeant and military affairs consultant who also worked for two members of the U.S. House of Representatives, died of cancer February 24, 1999 at his home in Manassas, Virginia.

Sergeant Mahoney, a native of Newton, Massachusetts, and a graduate of Boston College, served 24 years in the Air Force, retiring in 1970. During his military career, he served mainly as an air police investigator and instructor of modern communism. He served in Korea during the Korean War and in Vietnam during the war there.

His military honors included two Bronze Stars.

In 1972, Sergeant Mahoney joined the congressional staff of Representative John G. Schmitz (R-California), spending four years there as an assistant and speechwriter. He was a special assistant and military affairs adviser to Representative Larry McDonald (D-Georgia) for three years until the congressman's death in 1983.

He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Manassas, the Legion of Mary and the Special Forces Association. He was a trustee of the Durrell Foundation in Winchester.

His marriage to Madlynne Mahoney ended in divorce.

Survivors include his wife, Donna F. Mahoney of Manassas; four children from his first marriage, Theresa Mahoney of Newton, Massachusetts, Kevin F. Mahoney of Westport, Connecticut, and Roland Mahoney of Houston,Texas; and Patrick B. Mahoney, of Dallas, Texas; three stepdaughters, Lee Anne Monk of Fairfax, Virginia; Karen Blake of Brooklyn, New York, and Judith Mair of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a sister; three brothers; and six grandchildren."
