“Blockchain” has become a buzzword in the technology and financial industries. It is often cited as a panacea for all manner business and governance problems. “Blockchain’s” popularity may be an encouraging sign for innovation, but it has also resulted in the word coming to mean too many things to too many people, and—ultimately—almost nothing at all.

![]() Intelligence is about smart observation. Most law firms don’t get it. They employ “stick fetchers”: people who are asked to collect massive amounts of data and information with little rhyme and no reason. They call this competitive intelligence. ![]() (AP) — Nebraska is overusing solitary confinement for juveniles and has no statewide policies or oversight to ensure that the punishment is applied uniformly at different facilities, according to a report released Monday. The report by the ACLU of Nebraska says some juveniles have been placed in isolation for minor rule violations, such as talking back to staff members, having too many books or refusing to follow directions. Conrad said the group doesn't object to temporary seclusion for safety or security reasons, but that detention centers are keeping juveniles in solitary confinement for too long and without sufficient reason. Juveniles in solitary confinement are also more likely to commit suicide or hurt themselves, said Amy Miller, the ACLU of Nebraska's legal director. According to research published by the Department of Justice, more than 50 percent of all youth suicides in juvenile facilities occurred while young people were isolated alone in their rooms. Department of Health and Human Services Deputy Director Tony Green said his agency's facilities use solitary confinement as a last resort and aim to keep juveniles isolated for less than four hours. ![]() Legally and ethically gathering relevant data on your competitors can be a valuable, productive practice. And construction companies can go about doing so in a variety of ways. Among the simplest ways to build your competitive intelligence is to benchmark key metrics of your construction business against those of similar companies. That way, you can get an idea of whether you’re lagging behind in important areas or perhaps excelling in ways you didn’t even realize.
