Michael Gove revealed to be using PR-commissioned puff-polls as "evidence" | The Global Village | Scoop.it
Current affairs, world politics, the arts and more from Britain's award-winning magazine
Kevin Friery's insight:

The scandalous mendacity of the Department of Education and, in particular, Michael Gove.  The man who wants to rewrite history, who wants his name in every school bible, is using PR guff from Premier Inn and UKGold as 'evidence' for his crusade.  Frightening.

I came across this through a tangential link on something else I was reading.  We know it exists but it is always heartsinking to discover such blatant racism.  The Internet can be a very dark place indeed.

Kevin Friery's insight:

This is the rifle that was given to A FIVE YEAR OLD as a BIRTHDAY PRESENT in Kentucky.  Sadly the child fired it and killed his 2-year-old sister.  No charges have been brought.  What on earth are we doing to each other? What are we doing to our children?

Royal College of Teaching proposed

Royal College of Teaching proposed | The Global Village | Scoop.it
The idea of setting up an independent professional body for teaching is gaining momentum, with supporters setting out how it might work.
Kevin Friery's insight:

An interesting proposal.  I'm not sure about the 'Royal' element but in reality it tends to add gravitas - it would be good if we had some other descriptor that was similarly weighty.  In any profession, good governance comes from within the profession whereas in the UK teachers are subject to impossible levels of outside interference so that teaching has become more of a political tool than a social education medium.  I suspect many teachers will welcome this, but I look warily at the Royal College of Nursing, who have been in the dock over recent years for failure to protect the profession and the public - any National Teaching College would need to learn lessons from history.

Kevin Friery's insight:

It is great that she had instant access to evidence-based medicine through the National Health Service - one of the real Jewels in the British crown.  Thank goodness she did not have to rely on something useless like homeopathy, which has led to so many people in the Indian subcontinent dying because it is completely ineffective.

60 thoughts about turning 60 | The Global Village | Scoop.it
It's a landmark birthday, the perfect time to take stock of one's life so far. So what has The Thick Of It writer Ian Martin discovered now he has entered his seventh decade?
Kevin Friery's insight:

I cannot remember ever before feeling the visceral contempt I have for this gang of posh sociopaths. As a rough guide, I would say any government that sets the welfare of the comfortably off above the welfare of the old, the young, the sick, the poor, the oppressed, the disabled … well, call me old-fashioned but any government like that wants hosing down the drain.

Oxford college under attack over plans to display live shark at ball | The Global Village | Scoop.it
Students plan to boycott the event – billed as 'a night of decadence' – amid concerns about the animal's welfare
Kevin Friery's insight:

"It's worrying that a leading educational institution such as an Oxford college would allow that view of nature to be perpetuated, of animals as an extravagant, gaudy show. If the organisers won't cancel the shark then we won't attend and we will ask others to boycott the event as well.
