Putin’s new authoritarian Russia

Putin’s new authoritarian Russia | The Global State | Scoop.it
Denali Marsh's insight:

While officially a democracy, the Russian Federation has been slowly sliding back towards authoritarianism under the guise of patriotism and nationalism. In power for over fifteen years, Putin’s militaristic polices have even led him to invade Ukraine, threatening to push Europe to the brink of a Second Cold War.

Understanding ISIS

Understanding ISIS | The Global State | Scoop.it

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is a jihadist, Sunni militant group that has captured huge swathes of land across Iraq and Syria. Employing a strict interpretation of Sharia law, the group imposes harsh punishments and oppresses civilians in the territory it controls. Waging violent war against the Syrian government, Iraqi government, Kurdish militias, and the west, ISIS is currently engaged in a full time conflict on all borders. With tens of thousands of well-armed, well trained jihadists dedicated to their cause, ISIS is threatening to conquer even more territory and upset the careful balance of power in the region.

Why is Russia so interested in Ukraine?

Why is Russia so interested in Ukraine? | The Global State | Scoop.it

Recently, the Russian Federation has violated Ukrainian sovereignty, invading, occupying, and even annexing portions of eastern and southern Ukraine. Despite crippling economic sanctions from the United States and several European countries, Russia continues to advance, grabbing more and more territory.

Why is Russia so interested in Ukraine? What about Ukraine is so valuable that it’s worth alienating the international community and provoking the west?

The rise of France’s far-right National Front

The rise of France’s far-right National Front | The Global State | Scoop.it

While previously just a fringe party on the French political scene, the ultra-nationalistic, borderline fascist National Front has seen a surge of support in the last few years. The French, once skeptical of the National Front’s extreme views, have been driven into their arms by excessive immigration under president François Hollande’s unpopular pro-European Union policies. Campaigning on a platform of anti-immigration and a ‘French first’ approach, the National Front is now one of France’s most popular political parties and is a serious contender for the 2017 presidential elections.

Why is the United States the world’s most powerful country?

Why is the United States the world’s most powerful country? | The Global State | Scoop.it

The United States is the world’s only superpower, dominating the world’s economic and political systems. With the strongest military and economy, the United States is capable of global power projection, giving it significant influence worldwide. Few countries dare to oppose America’s political agenda.

But how did the United States rise to global preeminence over traditional European powers, such as the United Kingdom or France? Why aren’t other nations with large natural resources reserves and populations, like Russia, China, or Brazil able to compete with the United States?

What’s happening in Yemen?

What’s happening in Yemen? | The Global State | Scoop.it

Recently, the Republic of Yemen has collapsed in a violent three way civil war between the government, Houthi rebels, and radical jihadists. A sizable country with 24 million people, Yemen is a strongly tribal nation split relatively evenly between Sunni and Shia Muslims. Located just south of Saudi Arabia, Yemen is a highly armed society – the country has the second most firearms per capita in the world, only beaten out by the United States. In a powder keg of decades of internal conflict ignited by regional sectarian rivalries, the Yemeni Civil War is sure to be a destructive, bloody conflict.

Inside North Korea’s concentration camps

Inside North Korea’s concentration camps | The Global State | Scoop.it

North Korea’s concentration camps are one of the worst places on the planet. According to a recent UN investigation into the camps, the prisoners suffer extreme starvation, torture, and “unspeakable atrocities” comparable to Nazi concentration camps during World War II. An estimated 150,000 – 200,000 North Koreans are subjected to horrific abuse and mistreatment, forced to work long hours of hard physical labor every day.

The Tamil Tigers and Their Quest for an Independent Homeland in Sri Lanka

The Tamil Tigers and Their Quest for an Independent Homeland in Sri Lanka | The Global State | Scoop.it

Tamils are a fiercely independent minority ethnic group in Sri Lanka, an island nation of the coast of India, that have faced discrimination and persecution at the hands of the Singhalese dominated Sri Lankan government. Seeking their own, independent Tamil country free of oppression in the north-east Sri Lanka, the Tamils founded a militant organization to wage war against the government called the Tamil Tigers. From 1983-2004, the Tamil Tigers employed guerrilla warfare tactics and suicide bombings to gain de facto control over the Tamil-inhabited coastal regions of Sri Lanka.

The War of the Triple Alliance – Paraguay dreams of empire

The War of the Triple Alliance – Paraguay dreams of empire | The Global State | Scoop.it

You probably can’t even place Paraguay on a map (its in the middle, next to Bolivia), but during the 1800s it was poised to become the most powerful country in South America. Today Paraguay is a weak, landlocked country, but in the 1860s it was a fledgling regional power with an industrialized, self-sufficient economy, protected by a powerful modernized military. Paraguay’s rapid industrialization and militarization frightened its neighbors who feared an upset in the balance of power on the continent.
