Artificial intelligence is the hot topic of the moment.The most valuable firms in the world, including Amazon, Microsoft and Google, are in a race to hire leading AI researchers to advance their efforts on autonomous vehicles, medical diagnostics and a range of other ventures. At the same time, governments are rushing to support the technology that might drive the next economic paradigm shift with funding and incentives.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke to the promise of AI at a conference recently, where he focused on the opportunity for Canada to attract investment and create jobs in the burgeoning field. But are governments inadvertently laying the groundwork for their own irrelevance? As policy director at the University of Toronto’s Mowat Centre, I focus on the impacts of technology on the labour market, government services and social programs.

Companies have to simultaneously fill today’s roles and plan for future ones, most of them non-existent at the moment. Indeed, in a survey we conducted for the forthcoming book Goliath’s Revenge we found that only 27% of small companies and 29% of large companies believe they have the right talent for digital transformation.

Through our research we also uncovered six strategies companies can employ to ensure they have the people to accelerate digital innovation.

Automation is a topic on which most people have an opinion. The level of knowledge on the subject varies greatly, as does the amount of fear that people feel towards the technological revolution that is taking place.

I get the impression that even informed writers - including myself - in this field often take, for numerous reasons, convenient short-cuts when it comes to writing and talking about automation.

It is therefore time to address the abundance of factors that are influencing and will continue to influence how humanity moves forward with automation. It is an intertwined and complex network of factors that allow for multiple outcomes. This article will shine the light on a selection of these parameters.

Jony Ive, Chief Design Officer at Apple, was the first recipient of the Stephen Hawking Fellowship at Cambridge Union. His lecture to a crowd of about 400 was covered by The Independent — Apple designer Jony Ive explains how ‘teetering towards the absurd’ helped him make the iPhone

What struck me was how Ive clearly showed that to produce creative work one has to balance between getting lots of ideas and getting things done, especially creative new things. This constant dance between bigger groups of ideas and smaller groups of people working together requires both cooperation and collaboration. What makes it work is a desire to learn in order to get better.

Nearly 500 robots are heading to neighborhood grocery stores nationwide thanks to a partnership between Retail Business Services and Badger Technologies, the companies announced Monday. Both GIANT/MARTIN'S and Stop & Shop have agreed to deploy robots in nearly 500 of their stores, after successful pilot runs that improved store safety and efficiency, according to a press release.

The future of work is in hot debate all over the world. The World Economic Forum, the ILO, the International Confederation of Trade Unions, consulting firms, and universities like MIT have task forces asking what work will look like in the years ahead.

There are two problems with much of these debates. The first is an over-fixation with technology. The second is the view that technology has a trajectory all its own as if there is some iron law of physics that will determine its shape and effects. I challenge both of these premises: technology will of course be important; it is one of the big “megatrends” that will influence work of the future. But how it, and four other megatrends I will outline below will influence the future depends on the actions we take now. So I want to re-frame discussion in forums about the future of work from one of predicting the consequences of megatrends to one of how to engage the megatrends to produce better work, more inclusive societies, and a broader sharing of future prosperity.

A view of the world—a paradigm—will endure until it cannot explain new evidence. The paradigm must then shift to include that new information. We are now seeing a paradigm shift in the ways that organizations balance stability and dynamism.

The dominant “traditional” organization (designed primarily for stability) is a static, siloed, structural hierarchy – goals and decisions rights flow down the hierarchy, with the most powerful governance bodies at the top (i.e., the top team). It operates through linear planning and control in order to capture value for shareholders. The skeletal structure is strong, but often rigid and slow moving.

In contrast, an agile organization (designed for both stability and dynamism) is a network of teams within a people-centered culture that operates in rapid learning and fast decision cycles which are enabled by technology, and that is guided by a powerful common purpose to co-create value for all stakeholders. Such an agile operating model has the ability to quickly and efficiently reconfigure strategy, structure, processes, people, and technology toward value-creating and value-protecting opportunities. An agile organization thus adds velocity and adaptability to stability, creating a critical source of competitive advantage in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) conditions.

In as soon as 15 years, 40 percent of the world's jobs could be done by machines, according to one of the world's foremost experts on artificial intelligence. Kai-Fu Lee, a pioneer in AI and venture capitalist based in China makes this prediction in a Scott Pelley report about AI on the next edition of 60 Minutes, Sunday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m., ET/PT on CBS.

"AI will increasingly replace repetitive jobs, not just for blue-collar work, but a lot of white-collar work," says Lee. "Chauffeurs, truck drivers, anyone who does driving for a living-- their jobs will be disrupted more in the 15-25 year time frame," he tells Pelley. "Many jobs that seem a little bit complex, chef, waiter, a lot of things will become automated ... stores ... restaurants, and altogether in 15 years, that's going to displace about 40 percent of the jobs in the world." When pressed by Pelley about 40 percent of jobs being displaced, Lee says the jobs will be, "displaceable."

En su investigación, descubrieron que el país atraviesa un periodo de crisis: los recién graduados están sobrecalificados, son jóvenes desempleados y no cualificados para los trabajos disponibles en el mercado laboral; y que las nuevas generaciones no se sienten listas para afrontar los trabajos del futuro.

En una encuesta a 12,000 estudiantes de bachillerato y universidad alrededor del mundo, el 94% no se sienten listos para empezar a trabajar.

Al ser una generación nativa en el mundo tecnológico, muchos de los jóvenes menores de 23 años se educaron utilizando tecnología. Aún así, solo el 57% creen que su educación los preparó satisfactoriamente para el futuro.

Ese sentimiento de inseguridad y de falta de preparación proviene de no saber si cuentan con las habilidades que están buscando los empleadores, como por ejemplo pensamiento crítico o comunicación efectiva y que sus conocimientos digitales no sean aprovechados.

A young population and faster adoption of new technology mean employees need to upskill quickly. Jobs which are the highest paying today didn’t even exist 7-10 years ago. The speed at which industry is changing means employees who do not upskill quickly will see stagnation in their careers. This is the biggest threat to the new generation.

Whether or not to move an organization’s technology infrastructure to the cloud appears to be more of a question of “when” to begin the move; not a question of “if” it makes sense to make the move. Take Digital Transformation as an example, though spoken as a single phrase, is by no means a singular event; in fact, transitioning to the cloud is phase-worthy, hugely complex, and typically spread over a couple of years of diverse disruptions due the enormity of the move. While IT resources shoulder a great deal of disruption inherent in core infrastructure transition, the greater disruption occurs within the diversity of operational workforce performance within the organization’s dynamic learning performance ecosystem.

According to analysis from networking site LinkedIn, 2019’s employers are looking for a combination of both hard and soft skills, with creativity topping the list of desired attributes. The findings chime with the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs report, which concluded that “human” skills like originality, initiative and critical thinking are likely to increase in value as technology and automation advances.

Strengthening a soft skill is one of the best investments you can make in your career, as they never go out of style,” LinkedIn Learning Editor, Paul Petrone wrote in a blog. “Plus, the rise of AI is only making soft skills increasingly important, as they are precisely the type of skills robots can’t automate.”

The fear that technological innovation will increase unemployment is not new, and various theories in response suggest technology does not necessarily pose a threat to jobs. This column goes one step further, arguing that because automation requires rising wages and that requires increasing the set of labour tasks, innovation should ultimately reduce unemployment.

Many innovations come in the shape of machines that replace workers. We hear of cars that drive themselves, of robots that perform more and more tasks, and of how artificial intelligence can replace smart jobs. These technological developments cause alarm among many, and this has intensified since the last recession that began in 2008. The recovery from the recession has been slow, and especially in creating new jobs. That is why many have called it ‘a jobless recovery.’

Durante el último año hemos visto una gran cantidad de predicciones acerca de la participación de los robots y la inteligencia artificial en cada vez más puestos de trabajo. Por ejemplo, McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) apunta a que la automatización afectará a entre 400 y 800 millones de personas, quienes serán desplazadas de sus puestos de trabajo en 2030, es decir, aproximadamente el 14% de la fuerza laboral.

Otro ejemplo es el del Foro Económico Mundial (WEF), quien pronostica que para 2025 se eliminarán 75 millones de empleos debido a la automatización, pero a su vez se crearían 133 millones de nuevas funciones. Ahora, Kai-Fu Lee sube la cifra y apunta a que esto será peor de lo que se esperaba, ya que para 2035 el 40% de los trabajos del mundo serían realizados por algún sistema basado en inteligencia artificial.

During the last five years, the rise of AI has been truly astounding. From highly sophisticated robots and driverless cars, to a wide range of “under the bonnet” techniques that use AI, the market in AI is predicted to explode. According to a new report from market research firm Tractica [1], it is likely to grow from $643.7 million at the present time, to $36 billion by 2025. This represents a 57-fold increase over that time period. Yet, this is only the beginning. Many people associate AI with robotics, but the applications and usage of AI is becoming vast. In this paper, I will briefly examine how AI is likely to impact on our lives in the future.

The next two decades promise a full-scale revolution in our working lives. Before we look into the next 20 years, let’s take a quick look at the present – and something once considered paradoxical.

We’re already living in an age of a lot of robots – and a lot of jobs.

As the number of robots at work has reached record levels, it’s worth noting that in 2018 the global unemployment level fell to 5.2%, according to a report last month – the lowest level in 38 years.

In other words, high tech and high employment don’t have to be mutually exclusive. We’re living the proof of that today.

Given this synchronicity between employment and tech, I believe there are reasons to be hopeful that jobs will become more accessible, more flexible and more liberating over the next two decades.

Here are five significant changes I foresee, as I previously highlighted for the World Economic Forum:

Un reporte del Foro de Economía Mundial estima que cerca del 52% de las tareas laborales de ahora serán desempeñadas por una máquina, en comparación al 29% de hoy en día.

Para el 2022 se desplazarán 75 millones de empleos, un número preocupante si no se toma en cuenta que se proyecta la creación de 133 millones, 58 millones de nuevos empleos netos.

Lo más alarmante no es la cantidad de empleos perdidos o ganados, o el porcentaje de máquinas haciendo tareas laborales, sino la necesidad de los empleados de renovarse. El 54% de los trabajos requerirá que adquieran habilidades significativas en los próximos años para aprovechar al máximo las oportunidades de crecimiento que ofrece la Cuarta Revolución Industrial
