The Future of Work: Offices are changing, and for the better

The Future of Work: Offices are changing, and for the better | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it
Work as we know it is changing fast—and in ways most people can’t even imagine. It’s not just that jobs are changing; it’s also how we work, where we work, and how employers are adapting to these new rules.

“The future of work is all about employee experience,” says Jacob Morgan. The best-selling author, an authority on how the workplace is evolving, says employers need to change their approach if they want to attract and retain key talent.

“It comes down to three things: giving employees physical workspaces they want, having up-to-date technology (the tools they need), and a culture they can celebrate,” says the author of The Future of Work. His latest book on the topic, The Employee Experience Advantage, was released in March.

A Leadership Model for the Next Paradigm

A Leadership Model for the Next Paradigm | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

In the old paradigm, leadership was much like a pack of lions. There could be only one alpha male and everyone else was subordinate to this male. There was a clear hierarchy when it came to feeding, with the most important eating first and the least important last. If a member of the pack didn’t abide by the rules the violator was ostracized from the community, left to become either a lone male in search of another pack or ultimately die.

Leadership in the industrial age followed much the same model. One CEO at the top was ultimately responsible for all the decisions, the rest of the organization subordinate to this one leader. The hierarchy was also much the same. There was fierce competition between the pride members to compete for the alpha male position with the strongest and most cunning ultimately the winner. When a team member didn’t follow the rules imposed by the leader, he was fired or in more subtle ways invited to leave by making the environment so uncomfortable that the only option was an exit.

Automation is a force that is continuously changing the nature of human work. First it replaced brute force with powerful machines, changing the nature of agriculture, mining, construction, and other fields of human activity. Then automated programs replaced simple work like withdrawing money from a bank account. Now automation is replacing complicated work, like coordinating drivers and passengers within a community, in real time. Any process that can be mapped, analyzed, and understood will be automated. As networked computers and the algorithms behind them become more powerful, even more complicated work will get automated. One banking industry analyst expects 30% of banking jobs disappearing in the next few years due to automation.

The Future of Work

The Future of Work | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

As Google’s Larry Page and others have said, the amount of jobs available for people is going to decrease as technology advances. New innovations will drive industries forward, but they will also reduce our reliance on people power. Ideas such as driverless cars and drones are becoming a reality, and machines will be used for more and more jobs in the future. Even pilot-less planes will be become the reality in the not too distant future.

Work | Scoop.it

Each time work gets outsourced or tasks get handed off to a machine, “we must reach up and learn a new skill or in some ways expand our capabilities as humans in order to fully realize our collaborative potential,” McGowan said.

Therefore, education needs to shift “from education as a content transfer to learning as a continuous process where the focused outcome is the ability to learn and adapt with agency as opposed to the transactional action of acquiring a set skill,” said McGowan. “Instructors/teachers move from guiding and accessing that transfer process to providing social and emotional support to the individual as they move into the role of driving their own continuous learning".

Conversation about the future of work typically involves common themes such as the need to become a digitally focused organization and the value you can get from machines, from robotics to cognitive technologies. The impact of changing demographics also features heavily in discussions on today's workforce, as do changing views on work and careers, with the "gig" economy (in which laborers conduct freelance, contract, or single-task work, rather than permanent jobs) on the rise and the disappearing notion of "lifetime employment."

The following framework provides a more integrated view that highlights areas likely to have the greatest impact—starting with the roles of technology and the rise of alternative work arrangements, as well as the implications for people, organizations, and governments.

Work | Scoop.it

Work | Scoop.it

Tendencias TIC 2018

Tendencias TIC 2018 | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

Work | Scoop.it

Work | Scoop.it

The organization of the future: Arriving now

The organization of the future: Arriving now | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

High-performing organizations operate as empowered networks, coordinated through culture, information systems, and talent mobility. Companies are focused on redesigning the organization itself, with nearly half actively studying and developing new models. And many organizations are not only designing but also building this new organization. As networks and ecosystems replace organizational hierarchies, the traditional question “For whom do you work?” has been replaced by “With whom do you work?

  • Fully 88 percent of this year’s survey respondents believe that building the organization of the future is an important or very important issue.
  • More than three in five (59 percent) say the issue is very important—a 3 percent increase from last year.
  • Yet challenges remain: Only 11 percent of survey respondents believe they understand how to build the organization of the future.

Winning the uncertain future

Winning the uncertain future | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

Attending the OEB (ONLINE EDUCA BERLIN) conference was an avenue to broaden my horizon, and to prove once more that learning is about people – be it offline or online. Technology is there to support people’s interactions and learning, and not to replace it. There are only a few simple questions: are we ready for this, do we allow it to happen, and how?

The question is whether we can learn to live with the uncertainty. Can we accept it, manage it and even thrive on it? The conference was charged with words such as change, agility, passion to learning, new economy, new skills, new missions, artificial intelligence, disruptive technology, change agents, value creator, front-runner, and more. Participants echoed back their expectations, questions and thoughts, including critical observations, which were also beneficial to hear.

5 insider tips to find high-paying Remote Work

5 insider tips to find high-paying Remote Work | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

There’s nothing like waking up each morning knowing you don’t have to compete with traffic, fight people on public transportation or even rush to get dressed. My last position was as a Mobile UX Architect, and in that position, I was able to work from home 100 percent of the time. That’s right — every day I worked from home, eight hours a day. Every morning, I went to the gym, cooked breakfast and chatted on the phone with my retired mother before starting my work shift. I had never been so calm in my life — a stark contrast from when I was traveling 90 minutes to work each way in my previous role.

When I resigned from that job, I vowed to myself that I would only search for and consider remote jobs. Luckily, as an information technology professional, it was easy to find remote job options. As I began my search, I developed my own remote job search formula. This helped me not only maximize my options, but also helped me save more money — when you work from home, you skip out on so many hidden work expenses like gas, eating out for lunch and dry cleaning for formal clothing.

How education must change: Seeking mission and purpose in the jobless economy

How education must change: Seeking mission and purpose in the jobless economy | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it
Historical analogies can be misleading. The Industrial Revolution required more hands to operate machinery. The Knowledge Economy required more minds to do cognitive work. With AI and automation, we’ll require fewer of each. What work will be beyond hands and minds?

And this process will happen much faster. Past transitions occurred over generations. According to economic historian Paul David, electrification of manufacturing from the late 19th Century onward took about 40 years from the first central power station to the recognition of significant productivity gains to the economy. Massive Chinese manufacturer Foxconn last year announced it profitably replaced 50,000 jobs with robots. Insurance actuaries — a solidly white collar career — are already at risk. Expect our transition to be more rapid and possibly contentious.

Generational perspectives of U.S. employees

The face of U.S. employment is changing. While some experts look ahead and wonder what robots and automation will mean for various markets, others point to a different trend as the average age of employees continues to rise.

Millennials may make up the largest sector of the working force in America, but by 2024, the median age of U.S. workers will climb to over 42 years old.

As more baby boomers put off retirement and millennials continue to enter the workforce at an astounding rate, relationships between employees will also change. We surveyed over 1,000 Americans to get their opinions on both older and younger colleagues – including their work ethic, willingness to learn, and creative capacities – by ranking them on a scale of 1 to 7, with 1 least exhibiting the quality and 7 most exhibiting the quality. Continue reading to see how people from various industries feel about working with one another today.

The real Future of Work

The real Future of Work | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

If the workplace is changing so much, would it be possible to invent a new kind of worker? One solution that has begun to arise among labor experts is to create a third, hybrid worker classification—something between an employee and a contractor, offering protections to people, like Uber drivers, who might not be “employees” but work chiefly for one company. But this argument has already started to break down along partisan lines. Republicans tend to support it as overdue acknowledgment that many workers in the modern workplace don’t fit neatly into the employee or contractor box. Democrats are wary of creating a category that might let employers shift even more employees into less-stable work arrangements.

Work | Scoop.it
