Let YouTube be your teaching guide, says expert

Let YouTube be your teaching guide, says expert | The future for FE HE | Scoop.it

"Teachers should stop relying on traditional teaching methods and opt for 10-minute video lessons to capture the “wandering minds” of their students, according to a world expert on digital learning.

Lessons that lasted up to an hour and relied on pupils paying attention to a teacher at the front of the class were out of date and failed to address how young people learned in the internet age, said Sanjay Sarma, director of digital learning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US."

52 of the best apps for your classroom in 2015

52 of the best apps for your classroom in 2015 | The future for FE HE | Scoop.it
What are the best apps for your classroom? The best little bits of software to use tomorrow, in your school, to make your classroom go?

This is, strangely, not a frequent topic for us. We are more interested in helping you push your classroom towards something unrecognizable–something that reflects the extraordinary change the world has seen but many public schools have somehow resisted. Something that centers students, helps them learn what’s worth understanding, and then equips them–and you–to make that learning happen.

But what if that’s not your bag? What if you have a classroom and standards and tests and pressure and walkthroughs and parents and IEPs and 504s and classroom management issues and bandwidth problems and Draconian district filtering and that’s just the way it is? What then?

This is the reality that, if statistics don’t mislead, most of you face on a daily basis. The good news is, there is a lot you can do in a traditional, top-down, “high-pressure” school or classroom. The apps below represent 52 (which conveniently works out to about one per week if you want to try them that way) of the best apps for your classroom. There are apps that help teachers gather data, scan exams, contact parents, promtoe research, keep notes, share documents, or even flip your classroom in 2015.

Editorial Statement For This Collection:

Thank you for visiting this curation of articles on leadership storytelling. I've chosen them because they actually make a contribution to our knowledge and wisdom about stories, show us how to work with stories in leadership, org culture, key business functions, and the like.

I weed out all the junk. And besides, who needs another post in why storytelling is important?? Where's the beef?? We want the meat!

I'm the author of the bestselling book Business Storytelling For Dummies (with Lori Silverman) and an original in the field of business storytelling. Based on my 20+ years of biz story experience, (plus a PhD in Folklore) I've written reviews of each article to share what I like best, what you can get from reading the article, or what may be missing in the article.

How To Find A Topic: Click on the Filter icon above (look for the 'funnel' shape), and view the tags. Select one that interests you, or type in a keyword in the search box. All the articles with that tag or keyword will appear.

I may occasionally review an article that I think is problematic as a way to educate us all, although most I will simply pass over. If you wonder if I've seen an article that is not included here, send me a message at linkedin.com/in/karendietz and I'll respond.

I trust you find many great insights and tips here. Many thanks for visiting and enjoy the articles!

Don't forget to connect with me on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, too. See you around the leadership and storytelling 'hood.

Moving beyond the textbook

Moving beyond the textbook | The future for FE HE | Scoop.it
There are a lot of misconceptions around the transition from textbooks into the world of digital content delivery. The biggest mistake schools can make is simply changing out one medium of delivery for another without ever assessing or changing the content or method of delivery. Simply, let's take a 19th-century tool and place it on a 21st-century device. This is not the way to leverage the power of an iPad or, for that matter, any device you integrate in your classroom.

Viljenka Savli (http://www2.arnes.si/~sopvsavl/)'s curator insight, December 5, 2014 9:19 AM

I would point out also this important issue in the article:

While some may argue that this creates more work for educators, it should actually become a practice that all life-long learners or lead learners engage in regularly. At the core, educators are hired as content experts who will stay abreast of the changing landscape in their area of expertise.

Joran Le Cren's curator insight, December 5, 2014 9:39 AM

Textbooks are used for centuries to help students to go through useful content on a specific discipline. While this curation is still important, we can do much more in this numeric era. This article asks the question how to improve our curation process for the numeric age. Somehow, I think Connectivist MOOCs try to answer this question: http://www.connectivistmoocs.org/what-is-a-connectivist-mooc/

Kathy Schrock: 6 Apps That Target Higher-Order Thinking Skills -- THE Journal

Kathy Schrock: 6 Apps That Target Higher-Order Thinking Skills -- THE Journal | The future for FE HE | Scoop.it
A higher-order thinker is a critical thinker. What are the attributes of a critical thinker? In The Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking Concepts and Tools, Richard Paul and Linda Elder describe a well-cultivated critical thinker as someone who:
raises vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely;gathers and assesses relevant information, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively; comes to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards;thinks open-mindedly within alternative systems of thought, recognizing and assessing their assumptions, implications and practical consequences as need be; andcommunicates effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems.
