Filter Fault...

Educational Leaders debate the implementation and usage of filters in
terms of providing resources for students of various ages. The hope
that a tool can effectively protect teachers and students from harmful
influences that can stray students from learning objectives is a false
one. The time spent on evaluation of various filtering tools could be
better spent training educational leaders about effective research skills,
resource evaluation, and curriculum integration.
Educators have a false sense of security when using filters. Students
are finding ways to get around filters while at school, and most go from
a very protected environment at school to an open and nonchaperoned
environment at home. Educational professionals should
concentrate on training other professionals, parents, and students
about proper usage of the Internet and other technologies and develop
the professional skills to distinguish what is appropriate in order to prepare them for further educational and career opportunities in a
changing world.
