‘Draining, humbling, inspiring’: Steven Caulker’s life-changing Sierra Leone trip

‘Draining, humbling, inspiring’: Steven Caulker’s life-changing Sierra Leone trip | The Equaliser | Scoop.it
Most footballers spend the close season on the beach or on the golf course, but QPR’s Steven Caulker has given something back to Sierra Leone, the birthplace of his grandfather, after a remarkable voyage of discovery, he tells Dominic Fifield
Bryan Murphy's insight:
This man is a role model. For other footballers. And everyone else. It is a pity the journalist ends with a plea for people to sponsor a child - the most divisive, unequal way to "help" a community. We should follow Steven and help whole communities, not individual members of those communities.

Wenger - fixing may never go away | The Equaliser | Scoop.it
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger doubts match-fixing will be wiped out of football but hopes any such incidents are isolated.
Bryan Murphy's insight:

Incredibly, these people are still in denial. The fact is that match-fixing happens at every level of the game, in every country whose results people can bet on. The "passion of the fans" has nothing to do with it. It is all about money.

Gambling rife in football, says Kyle

Former international striker Kevin Kyle says "the majority of players" in Scotland gamble on football matches.
Bryan Murphy's insight:

This is how it works: you bet on your own team to lose, and you make sure they do. So you cheat not only the betting company, whom nobody need feel sorry for, but your own club, every single one of their supporters and, indirectly everyone who loves the game and believes that it is (or can be) clean.

FA's 'dereliction of duty' on match-fixing

FA's 'dereliction of duty' on match-fixing | The Equaliser | Scoop.it
The FA is accused of a "dereliction of duty" after failing to question three non-league clubs about suspicious betting.
Bryan Murphy's insight:

This is the level at which "my" team, Tonbridge Angels, plays. We're a small team, not under suspicion. Now we know that our level is not too small for match-fixing. As long as people can bet on it, there is no guarantee that a match will not be fixed. We had better all stop pretending that it is not a problem.
