Cristina DiNardo's insight:
What does “Environment as the Third Teacher” mean?Essentially space and its’ content “speaks” to all ofus and influences our responses. For example when you walk into a library you immediately lower your voice, the layout of the room suggests possible actions (read a book, research on a computer, listen to a story telling session).Children’s and adult’s behavior is influenced by the organisation of space, lighting, acoustics, furniture, equipment, textures, colour, heating and cooling. All of these elements “speak” to us and influence our thought processes and actions. Knowing the possible responses to the environment, observing and reflecting on these responses is a powerful educational tool.As educators we have a responsibility to be open to the possibilities of different realities, to create environments as places of wonder and multiple listening where children undertake their own research.
