The Difference Between Empathy And Sympathy - TeachThought

The Difference Between Empathy And Sympathy - TeachThought | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
What’s the difference between empathy and sympathy? There is one, and it’s pretty important.

In brief, empathy is feeling with or alongside someone, while sympathy is feeling sorry for, which Brene Brown, research  professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, explores in the video above. Brown reduces the difference between empathy and sympathy as the difference between feeling with and feeling for, calling empathy a ‘sacred space’ and a ‘choice.’

A Guide To The Trendiest Words Right Now

A Guide To The Trendiest Words Right Now | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it

Have you always been on top of all the new, viral words young people say?

Great. Of course you have. But even the trendiest among us now struggle to understand how words that definitely have real meanings don't seem to be used properly anymore. It used to be enough to Google "What are the new slang words?" but slang itself is pretty irrelevant these days.

Are you ready to be relevant AF?
You may notice that many of these words lack a certain je ne sais quoi, and that is because they have no “quoi.” They are, for the most part, a bunch of silly, goofy words. But they're so damn fun to use.

So live a little, and indulge your inner Vine star. We're not getting any younger, and the wild world of viral words is not one to be afraid of — it's one to embrace. Let's get to it. We've got a lot of ground to cover.

The importance of school libraries in the Google Age

The importance of school libraries in the Google Age | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
We continue to hear about the lack of trained library staff in schools, despite ongoing research indicating that the presences of teacher librarians lead to improved learning outcomes and NAPLAN Reading Literacy results. How Engineering Class in 9th Grade Can Excite Diverse Learners

How Engineering Class in 9th Grade Can Excite Diverse Learners | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
Engineering has been getting a lot of attention because of its real-world applications and clear job prospects, but learning to think like an engineer could be useful no matter what students decide to pursue for work. At Science Leadership Academy, a public magnet school in Philadelphia, all ninth-graders take a one-semester introduction-to-engineering course to help them learn how to tackle big projects. That’s a skill they will need in every high school class going forward at this project-based, inquiry-centered school.

10 Strategies To Help Students Use Social Media For Critical Thinking -

10 Strategies To Help Students Use Social Media For Critical Thinking - | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it

Social media is here to stay.

No matter how much we lament a loss of privacy, too much screen time, superficial identity, or countless other worries, media has been around since language was invented, and we have always sought to make that media as social as locally available technology would allow.

From chisels and tablets to the printing press to radio and television to twitter and Facebook, as long as we continue to have thoughts and ideas, we will continue to seek to publish and socialize them with others.

This is SO exciting!

We've also had Happy News in Howard County, Maryland!

2 years ago, our Library Media Assistants were cut and placed in different departments - because they were considered a "luxury."

This spring, we got a new AWESOME superintendent, Michael J. Martirano @mjmsuper & he reinstated them!

W00t! I won't believe it 100% until I see her dear face back in August, but I am so chuffed! Prayer really works!

Other good news in Maryland! We passed a 2% cap on Testing!

"Maryland State Education Association President Betty Weller called it “a huge step in rolling back the disruptive and counterproductive over-testing culture in our schools. By eliminating more than 700 hours of unnecessary district-mandated testing across the state, our kids will get back days — and in some cases weeks — of instruction time to learn well-rounded skills and gain valuable problem solving ability.”
