Wallwin emphasizes that teachers are not expected to be coding experts in her classrooms. “We want them to begin the journey as co-learners with their students. We don’t ask that they be coders, we ask that they be learners!” She has been amazed at the mindset students develop as they practice computational thinking. One grade 2 Beardmore Public School student commented on the frequency of errors, growth mindset and subsequent learning: “You mess up all the time because you don’t know, but you debug.”

Ten Creative Alternatives to Showing Movies Before the Break - John Spencer @spncerideas

Ten Creative Alternatives to Showing Movies Before the Break - John Spencer @spncerideas | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
Let’s just put it out there. December is exhausting for teachers. The days are shorter. The weather grows colder and (at least here in Oregon) wetter. Students are anxious — whether it’s a buzzing excitement for vacation or a sense of dread that some kids feel in homes that are unsafe during the holidays.

And teachers are tired. They’re tired of redirecting behaviors and tired of the mid-year pressure of the test and simply tired of the sheer energy it takes to be a teacher.

It’s no wonder that so many teachers begin playing holiday movies around this time of year. They want to create a sense of fun and escape and enjoyment, and a motion picture promises exactly that. Maybe that’s okay. Maybe that’s a part of creating a culture of joy. So, please don’t read this post as a slam on teachers showing movies before the break. If this is a part of a positive classroom culture, keep doing it. This isn’t meant to be a guilt trip or a rant or a “you’re doing this wrong” post. This is meant to be a yes/and post offering other options.

How Parents Can Help Kids Navigate the Pressures of Their Digital Lives - Mind/Shift

How Parents Can Help Kids Navigate the Pressures of Their Digital Lives - Mind/Shift | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
As adults witness the rising tides of teenaged anxiety, it’s tough not to notice a common thread that runs through the epidemic — something that past generations never dealt with. Clutched in the hand of nearly every teen is a smartphone, buzzing and beeping and blinking with social media notifications.

Parents, all too often, just want to grab their teen’s phone and stuff it in a drawer. But is social media and the omnipresence of digital interactions really the cause of all this anxiety?

The short answer is: It’s complicated.

Multimedia publishing tools that include a collaboration component can further help students as they work together with each other or with you to improve their work.

It’s Time to Optimize for Google As a Recommendation Engine

It’s Time to Optimize for Google As a Recommendation Engine | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
Ask anyone what Google is and the most likely answer will be that it’s a search engine, which is pretty hard to argue with. The tech giant’s most important platform is called Google Search, where people type in queries and get search results in return.

Pretty conclusive stuff.

Except the nature of search is drastically changing, as Google further integrates machine learning and artificial intelligence into everything it does. We now get personalised search results based on our location, user history and content preferences. We get content recommendations popping up on our phones and alerts for the latest news, sports results and travel updates.

The further Google develops its technology, the less we find ourselves searching. Instead, Google is becoming more of a recommendation engine than a search platform – and marketers need to start optimising for this now.

Via John Evans
GwynethJones's insight:

Why don't we still (officially) teach Google advanced searching strategies in schools?

5 Reasons Why Reading Comics Will Help Your Kids Improve Their Literacy Skills - GeekDad | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
Babies start reading by recognizing pictures, and then continue their love of stories by progressively improving their pattern recognition and visual skills. You can start reading to your kid even before he or she is born! Picture books are a favorite for this very reason, and from a classic board book like Eric Carle′s The Very Hungry Caterpillar to a comic board book like Wonder Woman ABCs, comics can be around from the very start.
