Slavery and the American University | by Alex Carp | NYR Daily

Slavery and the American University | by Alex Carp | NYR Daily | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it
The first enslaved African in Massachusetts was the property of the schoolmaster of Harvard. Yale funded its first graduate-level courses and its first scholarship with the rents from a small slave plantation it owned in Rhode Island. The scholarship’s first recipient went on to found Dartmouth, and a later grantee co-founded the College of New Jersey, known today as Princeton. From their very beginnings, the American university and American slavery have been intertwined, but only recently are we beginning to understand how deeply.

Sarah's curator insight, June 4, 2017 8:20 PM
This is a bit of inception with an article on the benefits of curation, curated into a collection on Scoop It. This article discusses the way that curation can enhance higher order thinking by allowing students understand, analyze and evaluate content matter as they curate it. It gives examples of tasks as well as way to present the information. It is a great resource for planning activities to cultivate higher order thinking.

News literacy tools: Advice, four sites and a new app (Swiipe) — @joycevalenza NeverEndingSearch

News literacy tools: Advice, four sites and a new app (Swiipe) — @joycevalenza NeverEndingSearch | Daring Ed Tech | Scoop.it

"One of the reasons our students find and use news that is less than credible is that their news habits are less than energetic.

Among the ten key trends Pew researchers gathered from among their research reports on social and news media were:

*Use of mobile devices for news continues to grow.

*Two-thirds of Americans (67%) get at least some news on social media.

*Social media and direct visits to news organizations’ websites are the most common pathways to online news.

*Online news that comes via emails and texts from friends or family is the type of news encounter most likely to result in a follow-up action.

So, let’s work with the data to improve access, quality, and literacy."
