Brexit will knock Manchester United off top of world's football rich list, Deloitte warns | The Business of Sports Management | Scoop.it
Manchester United may be about to lose its coveted title of football’s richest club, as a result of Brexit. According to the Football Money League - an annual report compiled by the financial consultancy firm Deloitte - the Old Trafford club has this year regained its position as the world's highest revenue-earning club for the first time since 2003/04. But the glory could be short-lived. The latest version of the report released on Thursday warns it will likely be replaced by Spanish giants Real Madrid or Barcelona next year.

OECD survey finds football riddled with match-fixing and little being done | The Business of Sports Management | Scoop.it
By Andrew Warshaw
May 11 – Neither governments nor the sports industry are doing nearly enough to combat and reduce match-fixing and illegal betting according to a comprehensive new report released by the 34-nation Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
The survey, compiled over many months by the OECD’s Task Force on Countering Illicit Trade but only recently made public, says sports organisations should be mandated to establish integrity committees “with real authority” to aid the fight against criminal gangs. Read more …

beIN launches $1bn claim again Saudis for IP theft as Qatar state goes to WTO for help | The Business of Sports Management | Scoop.it
By Paul Nicholson
October 1 – Saudi Arabia has been hit with a two-pronged billion dollar offensive from broadcaster beIN and the Qatar state over the on-going copyright theft of pirate broadcaster beoutQ. A consortium of rights holders including FIFA and the Premier League are expected to follow suit in the coming days as the Saudis rapidly turn themselves into the pariahs of the sports rights business.
beIN is claiming damages in excess of $1 billion and is seeking full compensation via an investment arbitration under the OIC (Organisation of the Islamic Conference) agreement that protects and guarantees investments among member states. Read more …

Copyright theft: UEFA turns up heat on pirate Saudi broadcaster beoutQ | The Business of Sports Management | Scoop.it
By Paul Nicholson
June 22 – UEFA has added its voice to the fast-growing lobby of broadcasters and sports rights owners lining up against pirate Saudi Arabian sports channel beoutQ that has so far stolen feeds for every game of the Russia 2018 World Cup and rebroadcast to a middle east and north African footprint via the Arabsat satellite.
While FIFA has made very little attempt to protect its rightsholder – Qatari-based beIN Sport – UEFA’s statement is much harder hitting. Read more …

Global transfer spend hits $6.37bn in 2017, says TMS report | The Business of Sports Management | Scoop.it
By Andrew Warshaw
January 31 – As the winter transfer window in Europe draws to a close, the eye-watering scale of global spending on players has been laid bare by FIFA’s latest Transfer Market Report.
Once again, several records have been eclipsed with $6.37 billion splashed out during 2017 – up a staggering 32.7% – with English clubs, not surprisingly, the biggest spenders.
Most of the increase in global spending is accounted for by the few at the top: about two thirds (67.4%) of the $6.37 billion spent came from only 50 clubs from 13 member associations. Read more …

Apocalypse now. Report has nothing but bad news for football finance and its governance | The Business of Sports Management | Scoop.it
October 31 – Professional football clubs are under a growing threat from organised crime. Only 25% of clubs in top leagues worldwide produce publically-available financial reports. And only 40% of national associations are financially viable without the help of FIFA, an organisation whose top officials are being chased down by the US Justice Department under their RICO laws that are used to investigate mafia-style crime rings.
These are the top line findings of an independent report of the Financial Integrity and Transparency in Sport (FITS) Global Project, Read more …
