I don't want to spark a debate, but I'm curious how Christians in support of gay marriage interpret seemingly anti-gay Bible verses? See the following:

Same-Sex Marriage and Religion: An Inappropriate Relationship | Baker | e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work

Same-Sex Marriage and Religion: An Inappropriate Relationship
patricia cathleen coffelt's insight:

Baker,Brittney. "Same-Sex Marriage and Religion: An Inappropriate  Relationships." A Journal of Under Graduate work. Vol. 1. no. 3. n.  pag. Web. 8  July 2014.

In this Journal entry Baker gives  a brief overview of the gay marriage debate in the beginning.  She explains that when a debate is going on most of the funding comes from who ever supports the bill. just like with the California 8 bill. The majority of the funding comes from religious individuals. she gives examples for why there shouldn't be a state religion. She goes on to state that when a gay couple gets married it doesn't require religion and it doesn't put down religion either. Therefore, religion shouldn't keep same-sex couples from getting married. About half way through her article she explains that god is about forgiveness. if he can forgive the wicked, he can forgive the gay. even though they aren't doing anything wrong people need to hold onto that. She then says that if we continue to have same-sex marriage illegal we  will continue to have unequal citizens. when gays don't have the right to marry they are not equal.

Same-Sex Marriages, 10 Years Later

Same-Sex Marriages, 10 Years Later | the bible and gay rights | Scoop.it
Ten years after Massachusetts legalized gay marriage, the couples whose same-sex wedding announcements were the first to appear in The Times reflect on what marriage means to them.
patricia cathleen coffelt's insight:

Koblin, John. "Same-Sex Marriages, 10 Years Later." nytimes.com. The  new York Times Company, 2014. Web. 8 July 2014.

In this newspaper article Koblin talks about gay couples who have been married for ten years. he talks about a couple who set a date for their wedding before it was legal. Strangely enough that date was the weekend after it became legal for same-sex marriage. Their is another couple that talks about having two kids together. they say its no longer called parents, its called mommies. another couple talks about one of the wife's hardship with her family. she dosnt really have a relation ship with them. so instead she looks up to her wife's family which is her support. With same-sex marriages their is always a possibility of divorce just like nay other marriage. What this article show is that there is no difference between a reagular marriage and a same-sex marriage. they are all the same.

In this movie Bobby is struggling with being gay. When he finally comes out hes hit with hatred. His own mom  pushes religion down his throat to try and cure him. She eventually starts to hide him from her friends. Because he isn't accepted at home he leaves and goes to live with his cousin who is supportive of him. While hes living with his cousin he meets a guy and has his first gay relationship. the relationship goes well until David "the boyfriend" cheats on Bobby. At this point Bobby cant handle the rejection from his family and Betrayal from his boyfriend. He eventually gives up on life and jumps off of a bridge. after his death his mother becomes an activist in prompting gay rights. she regrets not accepting her son sooner. this movie is a true story. the hardships homosexuals receive are uncalled for and aren't necessary. people need to accept homosexuals for who they are.

patricia cathleen coffelt's insight:

Miller, Lisa. "Our Mutual Joy: The Religious Case for Gay  Marriage."Mcgraw-Hill Reader:Issues Across the Disciplines. ed.  Gilbert H. Muller. 11th ed. Boston; Learning Solutions, 2011.649-656.  Print.

In Millers essay she writes about gay marriage and how the bible supports it. She explains that most people don't turn to the bible to run there life. Most people don't want to.They don't want to base their marriage off of the bible. partially because, marriage in the bible wasn't all that great. She uses the fact that the bible was written by  man to her advantage. In that time men had multiple wives so the bible was most likely written by a man with two or more wives. in this day polygamy is also illegal. People still follow the bible but don't understand the man who wrote the bible most likely goes against their religion. The bible never once says gay marriage. people just assume that its in there.

A biblical defense of gay marriage

A biblical defense of gay marriage | the bible and gay rights | Scoop.it
This past holiday season, I was treated to a four-hour drive home to South Carolina, where I was greeted by purring cats, a new Beyoncé album and a binge watching of House of Cards.
patricia cathleen coffelt's insight:

McCartney, Brendan. "A Biblical Defense of Gay Marriage."      dukechronical.com. Duke Student Publishing Company, 2014. Web. 7 July 2014

McCartney explains in his blog that he is both a christian and a gay. He talks about how his parents had two different denominations. McCartney says he was lucky to be able to grow up in this environment because it didn't matter what the details of religion were but instead on the importance of any faith can give you. he says the bible say hardly anything on homosexuality and spends most of its time on "love, positivity, selflessness, and non-judgement". People can easily misread the bible. yes, the bible says that "man can not lay with man, as they would lay with woman, it is an abomination". This verse states that men can not have sex with other men. It does not mention anything about being in love with another man. The bible itself never says anything about homosexuality. It does state other words in the text that modern people have interpenetrated as homosexual.

The Supreme Court's split decision on gay marriage leaves the issue of legalization up to states. As we've noted, a number of states have existing bans on the practice. But which states might be in line to completely legalize marriages between same-sex couples? We checked.

patricia cathleen coffelt's insight:

Vines, Matthew. "The Gay Debate: The Bible and Homosexuality."  matthewvines.com. Matthew vines, 2014. Web. 8 July 2014.

In this transcript Vines is explaining all the ways the bible says gay marriage is a sin. He gives six examples of scriptures that go against it. At first his speech seems to me against marriage because he does spend a good chunk of it talking against it. but he then changes it around a little bit by saying both  gay marriages and normal marriages want the same thing and that's family and acceptance. He then starts to give scripture that dons't necessarily support gay marriage, but gives us another way to look at it. After this he then lets everyone know that he is gay. He continues to go on to use the bible for gay marriage. More people need to look at the bible this way. The bible tells us all the babe things to do as well as all the good things. Most people are so worried about not doing something they shouldn't do that they don't look at what there supposed to do.

Rhode Island on Verge of Becoming 10th State to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage

Rhode Island on Verge of Becoming 10th State to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage | the bible and gay rights | Scoop.it
On April 24, Rhode Island took a step toward becoming the 10th U.S. state to legalize same-sex marriage when its Senate approved a measure that would grant gays and lesbians the right to wed. Our analysis also discusses four other states that are considering proposals related to same-sex marriage.
patricia cathleen coffelt's insight:

Corbis/Larry Lee. "Rhode Island on Verge of Becoming 10th State to  Legalize Same-Sex Marriage." Pewforum.org. Pew Research Center,  2014. Web. 8 July 2014.

This article is about Rhode Island Legalizing same sex marriage. They are on their way to allowing that to happen. They aren't the first and they wont be the last. They are following the sates  Washington, new York, Maine, and Maryland. Other states like Illinois are also in the process of legalizing same sex marriage. This Article also goes on to talk about two bill that's are passing through the supreme court. One is California trying to ban it and the other is DOMA( the defense of marriage act. In the future more and more states are going to legalize marriage. People should stop looking at the bible and look at the happiness and love that comes from two people , no matter the sex, who want to get married. Everyone dreams of their perfect wedding so why cant a gay couple do the same. They should be able to.

patricia cathleen coffelt's insight:

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. "Same Love." Youtube.com. Ryan Lewis,  2012. Web. 8 July 2014.

In this song, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis talk about how stereo types can give everyone a "preconceived" idea of things. He then starts to explain how people think homosexuality can be cured, when it cant. He uses the line "god loves all his children is somehow forgotten but we paraphrase a book written thirty-five hundred years ago." In this line he's describing how most people react towards the bible and gay marriage. They follow the bible when its convenient for them to follow it. He then goes on to talk about how people use the word gay when they shouldn't. They use it to describe things they don't like. so when they say "that's gay" they are insulting anyone who is gay. I personally love this video. Its a great way to get people to stop and think about the way they act towards another human being. A lot of people listen to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis so, it was good for them to put this song out and have thousands of people here it.

McElwee, Sean. "Five Things Christian Fundamentalist Just Don't Get."  Huffingtonpost.com. The Huffington Post inc., 2014. Web. 07 July  2014.

I'm an atheist and i find the idea of god and the bible hard to believe. At the same time, I try to understand the religion everyone preaches. In my understanding god is supposed to love all. How can it be a sin to be gay ? how can you be sent to hell for an "abomination"? God is supposed to love all. Instead,  hes going to send his "children" to live an eternity among murders and child molesters all because, someone is interested in the same sex.  if God loves all, wouldn't he love the people who do nothing but love some they shouldn't? I chose this image because it says a lot. it focuses on the three words "God is love".

Atheist Rant: Gay Rights and the Bible (DOMA)

patricia cathleen coffelt's insight:

Johnson, Josh. "Atheist Rant: Gay Rights and the Bible."  Youtube.com. Josh Johnson, 2013. Web. 7 July 2014

In this video Johnson rants about how homophobia comes from the bible. He explains how so many people only look at that but don't look at the rest of the things in the bible. He gives examples of this by telling about the chapter that says a man should have multiple wives. He even gives you the scripture so you can look it up your self.  So, why is it okay to look at one thing but not the rest. Many people turn to the bible to rant against gay rights but, when its something to do with their own life they tend to look away from the bible. the bible does say the act of homosexuality is a sin. The bible also states that stealing, murder, and even jealousy is a sin. These are everyday acts of the world we live in. When a woman gets jealous because her husband committed adultery she doesn't think about how its a sin for her to feel that way while shes destroying his prized possession. if people are going to bash gay marriage and happiness they need to bash everything they do in their life as well.
