My Scoop on the effect of dams on human populations

Dams are created to halt and control the water flow of a river. This creates a reservoir. The water can then be released in desired amounts back into the river. This has both positive and negative effects.

Positively, the dam can generate electricity by capturing the energy produced by gravity acting on the falling water. Building dams can generate jobs for the community, and more steady jobs are created for those working with the electricity generated by the dams. The electricity can power the homes of thousands of people.

Negatively, dams can severely disrupt an ecosystem. It disrupts fish migratory patterns, which can decimate entire fish populations that would otherwise flourish and give jobs to fishermen. Dams can disrupt the nutrient flow down the river, effectively "starving" the river on the other side of the dam. All of these ecological problems effect the nearby human populations.

The Struggle Over Dams, Displaced People and the Environment

The Struggle Over Dams, Displaced People and the Environment | The Best Dam Newspaper | Scoop.it
The battle over dams is at the core of worldwide conflicts involving water scarcity, environmental degradation, globalization, social justice, and the growing gap between rich and poor.

Dams have both positive and negative effects on human populations. On the plus side, they create economic benefits. They create jobs for the local community, provide electric power to citizens, and can give water to citzens too. Dams can be a symbol of a country's power and industrial strength, too. Negatively, dams can disrupt entire ecosystems by creating a giant reservoir, wiping out houses and nature alike.

The Effects of Dams

Describes different kinds of dams, their effect on flow and temperatures, and their role in species extinctions...

For fish like salmon, dams prove to be a huge problem. Fish ladders on dams are often not present or are ineffective and cause fish not to be able to reach breeding grounds. Even when fish ladders work correctly, it does not guarentee that fish populations can grow. Water surges caused by releasing water from the dams to create energy can wash away spawning gravels, sometimes killing off the future generation of fish. All of these effects on fish limit the supply of fish to consumers and hurt the ecosystem.

A Flood of Dam Safety Problems

A Flood of Dam Safety Problems | The Best Dam Newspaper | Scoop.it

US safety officials have declared thousands of dams across the US as unsafe, mainly due to their age. These dams could potentially fail, breaking apart or overflowing and causing massive floods and loss of life. Failures would also cause millions of dollars worth of property damage and make the reservoir that was once held back by the dam disappear. Other areas of the world have similar or even worse problems with dam safety problems.

Dams Kill Thousands of Fish

Dams Kill Thousands of Fish | The Best Dam Newspaper | Scoop.it

Dams kill thousands of fish due to the disruption of their natural migration pattern. They can be killed in the turbines, which can limit food populations of the nearby people.
