Younger Skin Through Exercise

Younger Skin Through Exercise | The Basic Life | Scoop.it
Exercise appears to slow and even reverse the effects of aging on the skin.

Exercise not only appears to keep skin younger, it may also even reverse skin aging in people who start exercising late in life, according to surprising new research.

As many of us know from woeful experience, our skin changes as the years advance, resulting in wrinkles, crow’s feet and sagging skin. This occurs because of changes within our layers of skin. After about age 40, most of us begin to experience a thickening of our stratum corneum, the final, protective, outer layer of the epidermis, itself the top layer of your skin. The stratum corneum is the portion of the skin that you see and feel. Composed mostly of dead skin cells and some collagen, it gets drier, flakier and denser with age.

How to Burn More Calories Through the Day (Without Even Noticing)

How to Burn More Calories Through the Day (Without Even Noticing) | The Basic Life | Scoop.it

It’s amazing to me how easy it is to forget to move. This year was the first time in about five years that I found myself gaining weight. It wasn’t a lot, just five pounds over six months or so, but it was strange for me since I didn’t think I was doing anything different.

I write and think about healthy living all the time, and I absolutely love the food I eat. I no longer crave sugar, and avoiding it isn’t hard. If anything I have eaten healthier than ever during this time, since I started working at home and control 100% of my meals. I’ve been eating the same or better quality food than I always have, and have even improved on my mindful eating techniques."

It's Lack of Exercise—Not Calories—That Make Us Fat, Study Says

It's Lack of Exercise—Not Calories—That Make Us Fat, Study Says | The Basic Life | Scoop.it
One study says American diets have remained the same for the last 20 years

A new study published yesterday in the American Journal of Medicine reported over the last 20 years there has been a sharp drop in Americans’ physical exercise, and an increase in average body mass index (BMI), but that average caloric intake has remained the same.

The most startling finding in the study is the drop in the amount of exercise Americans do in our free time. The researchers found that from 1988 to 2010, the percentage of adults who reported doing no exercise in their free time grew dramatically from 19% to 52% in women, and from 11% to 43% in men.

Eric Chan Wei Chiang's curator insight, July 31, 2014 3:49 AM

It is rather alarming that 51.7 % of women and 43.5% of men in America do not exercise. The 2010 figures are more than double that of 1994.

What Happens To Our Brains During Exercise (And Why It Makes Us Happier)

What Happens To Our Brains During Exercise (And Why It Makes Us Happier) | The Basic Life | Scoop.it

What happens to our brains when we exercise or go for a walk.

"BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor).and endorphins are the reasons exercise makes us feel so good. The somewhat scary part is that they have a very similar and addictive behaviour like morphine, heroin or nicotine. The only difference? Well, it’s actually good for us."
