The Art of Texting While Walking

The Art of Texting While Walking | Texting and Driving-AJ Read | Scoop.it

The cognitive challenges of walking while texting are well known, both to scientists and to those of us who have ambled into a light pole or a fellow pedestrian or have been on the receiving end of someone else’s distracted movements. Strolling while talking on the phone — or, more particular, texting — ties up the brain’s relatively limited working attentional resources, most researchers would agree, much as those activities do when you are driving.

Safeguardiing/eSafety within most learning providers fails to highlight dangers like these...
Pay Attention
While texting-and-walking may present minor bodily threat to large inanimate objects and brisk speed-walkers, texting while driving or operating heavy machinery literally kills.
The potentially deadly practice, thankfully, is beginning to get the attention it deserves.
AT&T, in their “It Can Wait” campaign, has championed the anti-driving-and-texting initiative with videos about the dangers of driving distracted. I hope it works.

The Unlikely Network at the Core of Your Brain's Internet - Wired

The Unlikely Network at the Core of Your Brain's Internet - Wired | Texting and Driving-AJ Read | Scoop.it

To successfully send a text message, your brain has to compose the wording and coordinate the deft tapping of your thumbs while checking for typos. Solving a simple algebra problem involves the visual cortex — to process the symbols — and the parts of the brain used for computation and short-term memory. And driving, best performed without texting, requires a combination of visual, tactile and spatial data. How do different areas of the brain communicate and coordinate their efforts to complete these tasks? Neuroscientists have long struggled to understand the brain’s ability to synthesize a dog’s breakfast of sensory inputs and cognitive processes.

Measure filed to ban texting and driving in Florida

Measure filed to ban texting and driving in Florida | Texting and Driving-AJ Read | Scoop.it

TALLAHASSEE, FL (NSF) - Drivers would be banned from manually typing or reading texts, emails or other electronic messages while operating a car under legislation filed in the Senate Tuesday.

The measure (SB 52), filed by Sen. Nancy Detert, R-Venice, calls for the offense to be what is known as a "secondary offense," meaning officers could only ticket people for texting while driving if they've stopped them for some other traffic violation. That is, if a police officer sees someone texting they wouldn't be able to pull them over but if they see someone speeding and texting, they could tack on extra charges for texting in addition to the speeding penalty.

Drivers would still be able to read navigational devices or electronic maps without incurring a penalty under the proposal. Reading weather alerts or other safety-related information would also be exempt, as would using a hands-free voice-recognition application.

Texting while driving would be a nonmoving violation, punishable by a $30 fine, under the bill.

According to the National Conference on State Legislatures, Florida is one of only five states without some sort of ban on texting while driving. The others are Montana, South Dakota, Arizona, and South Carolina...

AT&T Campaign Targets Texting While Driving | National Journal

AT&T Campaign Targets Texting While Driving | National Journal | Texting and Driving-AJ Read | Scoop.it

AT&T is ramping up efforts to reduce texting while driving with a call for Americans to pledge to never text and drive.

"I hear from far too many people whose lives have been forever changed by a texting-while-driving accident, and together, we want to spread the word about how deadly a single text can be," AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said in a statement. "Texting and driving should be as unacceptable as drinking and driving."

Stephenson challenged on Americans to take a pledge on Sept. 19 to abstain from texting while driving a car. More than 100,000 vehicle crashes a year involve texting, according to numbers from the National Safety Council.

The latest effort is part of AT&T's "It Can Wait" campaign, which was spurred by calls from Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, who launched an awareness campaign in 2009.
