South Padre is getting back to normal again

South Padre is getting back to normal again | Texas Coast Living | Scoop.it

South Padre Island on the road to recovery, much like after the causeway incident story from 2002.

Michael Stuart's insight:

Flashback to an article from 2002 in Texas Monthly

"Gone was the smug notion that South Padre Island was a place where everyone wanted to be. The island had been humbled. With the causeway out, it became all too clear just how isolated South Padre really is—how dependent on services and people from the mainland, how reliant on tourists and the money they spend. The locals seemed more helpful than usual, aggressively trying to make a sale or get that extra tip. They had a needy look in their eyes."

This time its getting back to normal from the long recession, but come back it will, it always does.

South Padre Island, Texas: Vibrant Marine Life and Educational Centers

South Padre Island isn’t actually an independent island—it’s the name given to the resort town on the southernmost point of Texas’s much larger Padre Island, which stretches nearly 130 miles along the Gulf of Mexico. The town is linked to mainland Texas by a single bridge, the Queen Isabella Causeway. Because it occupies such a narrow stretch of land—at its broadest point, South Padre Island is only a few blocks wide—getting from the Gulf on the east side to Laguna Madre on the other takes only about 10 minutes on foot. Many visitors spend their vacations laying out on the area’s sandy beaches, which are home to more than 300 types of waterfowl, lofty sand dunes, and the occasional kemp’s ridley sea turtle. Others set sail on fishing charters to seek out swordfish, redfish, and spotted seatrout.

South Padre Island Lawsuit for Spring Break accident

South Padre Island Lawsuit for Spring Break accident | Texas Coast Living | Scoop.it

A judge will allow the City of South Padre Island to point the finger at third parties it says are responsible for a fatal drunken driving crash last Spring Break if a lawsuit filed by one of the victims goes to trial.

  • Francisco J. Zabarte, who is representing the City of South Padre Island in a lawsuit filed against it by Secilia Leija, said 107th state District Judge Benjamin Euresti granted the request Thursday morning.
  • Leija sued South Padre Island last August, claiming the city was negligent because there were no barricades or other protective instruments present to separate bike lanes from the main road.
  • Leija was seriously injured March 17, 2017, when a vehicle plowed into seven pedestrians, hitting six of them and killing one, 19-year-old Maria Selena Patino of Los Fresnos.
  • Authorities accuse Daisy Joy Decker, a 20-year-old Sugar Land woman, of being intoxicated and driving her car into a group of spring breakers.

Decker pleaded not guilty to a nine-count indictment that includes a charge of intoxicated manslaughter. Zabarte argues in the motion that Leija is suing the wrong party.

We're rapidly approaching summer vacation season. This time of year - perhaps more than any other - encourages us to unplug and drop off the grid. Summer seems to justify a little more distance from
