The Essential Guide to the English Present Tense

The Essential Guide to the English Present Tense | Testformula | Scoop.it
Let's talk about what's happening! You need to learn the details of English present tense—and you need to learn now. Understand how English present tense works.
Testformula's insight:

Guide to the English Present Tense.

We often heard people saying “live in the moment”, which means we should live right now. But how can we talk about right now?

Let’s say, you meet a new person and after exchanging your names, you probably want to know more about each other.

To talk about your likes and dislikes, hobbies and beliefs, you need to know the present tense and it is necessary for Basic English.

How, When and Why to Use English Present TenseWhat Is the Present Tense?

The word Tense comes from an old Latin word that means time: tempus.

A tense is how your listener knows what time you’re talking about and it tells you when an action occurred.

Use different forms of verbs—or action words—when we’re talking about something that happened already, something that is happening now or something that will happen in the future.

It is used for actions that are happening now, or that include what is happening now.

The present tense can be used in English in different ways

Should You Use Simple or Continuous?

Simple, continuous and perfect are three main forms of the present tense.

The simple form is used by General or repeated actions, Actions still in progress use the continuous form and Actions that have been completed use the perfect form.

We will only talk about the simple and continuous present tense in this article and you need to know how to use simple and continuous very well if you want to master present tense.

The simple present tense looks like this:

I/we/they [unchanged verb] for example: I speak, they walk, we wish.He/she/it [verb with -s at the end] for example: He speaks, she walks.

The continuous present tense looks like this:

I am [verb with -ing at the end]
For example: I am running, I am speaking.He/she/it is [verb with -ing at the end]
For example: He is eating, she is smiling.

Present Tense with telling time

When something happens, English tenses tell you.

These tenses alone don’t provide much information and when these tenses are used alone, without any extra words to help the description, a tense can only tell you that the action happened now, happened before or has not happened yet. Many times you want to get information that is more specific.

You can add special time-related words that answer these questions:

How long does the action happen for?How often does the action take place?

Talking About the Present

It tells about what is happening now.

But it is also the right tense to use if you want to share your beliefs, general ideas, hobbies, things that happen more than once and a few other ideas.

Learn English through Movies and Film: A Complete Guide

Learn English through Movies and Film: A Complete Guide | Testformula | Scoop.it
Want to learn English through movies and film? You've come to the right place! Here's our helpful guide for learning English through movies and film!
Testformula's insight:
A complete guide to learn English through movies and films

What would be the most fun way to learn English?

There’s nothing better than learning English through movies and film, if you’re tired of going to class or reading a textbook.

Is it right for me to learn English through movies and films?

The English speaking culture is different from our very own, so we find it hard to learn a foreign language. So sometimes, you might have trouble understanding what actors are actually saying, or what they’re doing on the screen.

Here are a few tips which I would like to share with you to learn English through movies and films. They’ll help you to learn helpful new words and phrases, but also enjoy watching movies at the same time.

Why Learning English with Movies and Film Works?

Perhaps you’re wondering whether you can really learn any English by watching movies.

Watching movies is supposed to be fun, after all and how can you learn while having so much fun with the film? And more importantly, why should you learn English with movies instead of textbooks?

Here are some reasons which I believe it works.

Learn real English…not textbook English. The English spoken in movies is very natural and it’s very close to what you’ll hear if you speak with native English speakers. This will help you in improving your spoken English. Whereas the English you learn through textbooks or in class is not what you’ll hear people say.Learn English words in context. This is one of my favourite aspects of watching movies. Suppose you like watching crime movies and after watching 10 or 20 movies, you’ll start to learn vocabulary related to the context, or subject of crime.

Usually, when we learn words in schools, we study things like vocabulary lists. The vocabulary lists will only help you to learn what words mean, but it doesn’t help you to where and how they should be used.

Hear how things are said. People often say that in English 30% of what we say is expressed through our words. While the remaining 70% is all about how you say it. The things like expression (like a smile, a frown) and your tone of voice (like when you sound angry, or when you sound sad).

Through observing carefully actors in films, it will not only help you to learn new words, but also you will be able to understand how they are said. The characters might be sad, happy, surprised, angry. And you’ll understand this immediately.
