PBA: Ginebra refuses to die, forces Game 7 against San Mig

PBA: Ginebra refuses to die, forces Game 7 against San Mig | PBA Game 7 - San Mig Coffee Mixers vs Ginebra Kings | Scoop.it
Barangay Ginebra San Miguel was relentless in the endgame, converting on key baskets while pulling off defensive stops to win Game 6 of their PBA Philippine Cup semifinals series against the San Mig Coffee Mixers, 94-91, to force a do-or-die Game 7.
Regenesis Uncad's insight:

In the final two minutes, it was PJ Simon who heeded the call for the Mixers, stringing five straight to give his team a three-point edge, 91-88. Ginebra then went to Greg Slaughter in the paint for two, but the big man missed the extra free throw off an and-one play. The Barangay expressed a big sigh of the relief though, as they secured the offensive board with 46.5 seconds remaining. Caguioa missed the potential go-ahead trey, but Mark Barroca failed to connect from deep as well. James Yap then sent Caguioa to the line, where the former MVP made both for a one-point lead, 92-91.

It was a battle of the bigs at the start of the second, as Slaughter and Aguilar matched up against Marc Pingris and Ian Sangalang in the paint, 32-26, still for the Mixers. Five from Barroca, plus a Justin Melton long bomb erected a 12-point lead for San Mig Coffee, as Slaughter and Mark Caguioa tried to keep Ginebra alive. The SMC turbo duo in Barroca and Melton completed easy layups off steals, before Greg Slaughter finished off a dunk, 46-34. LA Tenorio starred for Ginebra in the final minutes, trimming the lead to single digits at the half, 50-41.

Three-point shooting was a key factor, was Ginebra made 7-of-18 triples, compared to 4-of-16 by San Mig Coffee. The Barangay also got more free throw attempts and converted a better clip, going 19-of-25 versus 11-of-19. The Mixers however ruled the three hustle points categories, and also led in assists, 20-16.

The scores:

Ginebra 94 - Caguioa 21, Slaughter 20, Tenorio 16, Aguilar 13, Baracael 9, Helterbrand 5, Ellis 4, Reyes 4, Mamaril 2, Monfort 0, Urbiztondo 0

San Mig Coffee 91 - Pingris 20, Simon 17, Barroca 14, Sangalang 12, Reavis 9, Yap 9, Melton 5, Devance 3, Mallari 2, De Ocampo 0

Quarter scoring: 22-24, 41-50, 73-74, 94-91

Caguioa, Ginebra edge San Mig Coffee to force Game 7

Caguioa, Ginebra edge San Mig Coffee to force Game 7 | PBA Game 7 - San Mig Coffee Mixers vs Ginebra Kings | Scoop.it
Mark Caguioa played his best game yet and it couldn't have come at a better time for Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Monday night.
Regenesis Uncad's insight:

Caguioa topscored with 21 points to push the Kings past the San Mig Coffee Mixers in a 94-91 thriller and into a deciding Game 7 in the 2014 PBA Philippine Cup semifinals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Caguioa calmly sank his charities to give Ginebra the lead, 92-91, off a foul by James Yap before the rookie Slaughter made a couple freebies with 2.0 seconds left after PJ Simon missed a one-hander near the free throw line.

The seven-foot Slaughter finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds while LA Tenorio bounced back with 16 points after getting the flak for his decision-making in the waning seconds of Game 5.

Jaworski inspires Ginebra in win over San Mig

Jaworski inspires Ginebra in win over San Mig | PBA Game 7 - San Mig Coffee Mixers vs Ginebra Kings | Scoop.it
Philippine basketball legend Robert Jaworski gave the Barangay Ginebra Kings an emotional boost during the halftime break of their semi-final game against the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers last night at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
Regenesis Uncad's insight:

Ginebra was trailing, 41-50, at the half when “Jawo” entered the team dugout to fire up the squad and stir their “never say die” spirit.

The Gin Kings responded to Jaworski’s inspirational message, as they rallied past the Coffee Mixers to win the game, 94-91, and force a do-or-die Game 7 in the PBA Philippine Cup semi-finals.

Tenorio clamors for vets to take charge in Game 7 | Sports, News, The Philippine Star | philstar.com

Tenorio clamors for vets to take charge in Game 7 | Sports, News, The Philippine Star | philstar.com | PBA Game 7 - San Mig Coffee Mixers vs Ginebra Kings | Scoop.it

MANILA, Philippines -- Brgy. Ginebra point guard LA Tenorio expects little surprises from his former coach Tim Cone when his Kings battle the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers in the do-or-die Game Seven today.

For Tenorio, all the cards have been laid down in the first six meetings. He believes that Game Seven will just boil down to mental & physical toughness.

"For me, hindi na yan X's and O's. We just have to be ready mentally and physically," Tenorio said.

"We can't afford to start the way we did in Game Six. If we do that then we're dead," the all star point guard added.

But one thing he saw that will make the Mixers a tough customer to handle in a Game Seven is their experience.

After all, the Mixers are coming off a championship run in the Governors' Cup that gives them the slight advantage heading to Game Seven.

"He'll (Cone) stick sa kung ano ang nagwo-work para sa kanila which is their triangle offense. Kasi San Mig is already doing the triangle na parang automatic na eh. Wala na yung dati na natalo sila sa Powerade (Tigers)," Tenorio referring to the meltdown the Mixers suffered against the now defunct team in the quarterfinals of the same conference two seasons ago.

"Ngayon, ibang-iba na flow ang nila a triangle. Our term before ni Willie (Miller) when we were with Alaska, kahit nakapikit kami, we can run the triangle. Ganun sila ngayon," Tenorio continued.

To counter the Mixers' slight edge in experience, Tenorio is clamoring to have the veterans with him when push becomes shove.

"Greg [Slaughter] is there, matangkad siya and he's our advantage. But I think, mas gusto ko na towards the endgame, na kay Mark or Jayjay ang bola," he added. "They (Caguioa and Helterbrand) know what to do, been there and done that, so marami silang puwedeng gawin."

Caguioa, who was not around when Tenorio made the two miscues in the final 13 seconds of Game Five, made the most out of his rare endgame appearance in the series last Monday delivering a game-high 21 points on 9-14 shooting including nailing the foul shots that proved to be the marginal baskets in Game Six.

Helterbrand, meanwhile, made a key defensive stop on PJ Simon that preserved their precarious lead leading to their 94-91 win.
