Gamifying a Moodle course. What difference does it make? Week 1 - | TendenciasTIC-EDUCACIÓN | Scoop.it
[pulledquote]I announced a few weeks back that I would try and quantify the increase in engagement I have noticed when gamifying my Moodle courses. I have just started teaching two similar groups, and one has been exposed to the regular course, and the other to a gamified version of it.[/pulledquote] I will post my findings …

Why the modern world is bad for your brain

Why the modern world is bad for your brain | TendenciasTIC-EDUCACIÓN | Scoop.it
mental fog or scrambled thinking. Multitasking creates a dopamine-addiction feedback loop, effectively rewarding the brain for losing focus and for constantly searching for external stimulation. To make matters worse, the prefrontal cortex has a novelty bias, meaning that its attention can be easily hijacked by something new – the proverbial shiny objects we use to entice infants, puppies, and kittens. The irony here for those of us who are trying to focus amid competing activities is clear: the very brain region we need to rely on for staying on task is easily distracted. We answer the phone, look up something on the internet, check our email, send an SMS, and each of these things tweaks the novelty- seeking, reward-seeking centres of the brain, causing a burst of endogenous opioids (no wonder it feels so good!), all to the detriment of our staying on task. It is the ultimate empty-caloried brain candy. Instead of reaping the big rewards that come from sustained, focused effort, we instead reap empty rewards from completing a thousand little sugar-coated tasks.
Lilian Garsa's insight:

Herramientas para video Streaminh | TendenciasTIC-EDUCACIÓN | Scoop.it
Lilian Garsa's insight:

BlogTV.com - Allows you to broadcast live or pre-recorded shows, embed them on your blog, download favorite shows, and more. (CAMBIÓ DE SITIO y no es privado)

Live.Yahoo.com - Yahoo's live streaming service that sends messages to Twitter, embeds selected videos on MySpace, and offers an API for those who need it.

NowLive.com - Features personal channels as well as a heavy focus on scheduled shows and live coverage from events like movie premiers.

Seero.com - Mixes video streaming with geo-tagging to show you where the feed is coming from as well as factoids from that location.

Seesmic.com - Referred to as "the Twitter of video", Seesmic is a micro blogging video service for use with webcams.

UStream.tv - Popular with people wishing to do personal webcam shows as it also provides an embeddable chat room you can put into your own site.

Yaika.com - A European streaming service that makes your streaming page look like a blog so archives are broken down by date. (No active en estos momentos)

Others

EarthCam.com - More of a repository of old school webcams. People also use the service for shows.

HelloWorld.com - HelloWorld charges for their streaming service, but offers a lot of other services like private video IMs and more.

Icecast.org - Allows you to set up your own live streaming system, but is for more advanced users.

RantTV - Scheduled live streaming shows with a heavy focus on music.

ShoutCast.com - Allows you to set up a video stream just like you do with audio over the ShoutCast system.

Stickam.com - Focuses a bit more on a scheduled show format than other services, but supports desktop streaming. At this time Stickam has no mobile counterpart.

Server? We Don't Need No Stinkin' Server

As we just mentioned, streaming video works best if you use a computer that is especially set up to serve video. They call this computer a streaming server. It is usually a separate computer than the Web server computer, because transmitting the video can require a serious amount of computer horsepower, and a streaming server can take advantage of more methods of transmitting information over the Internet (called protocols) than a Web server. However, if you don't plan to have a large number of viewers, you can stream video from a regular Web server. Such programs as VivoActive VideoNow ($149) and Geo Interactive Emblaze VideoPro ($295), in fact, do not even use a streaming server. Emblaze VideoPro doesn't even use a player, it automatically loads one using Java when a viewer starts a video.
