"ONE: Students are on their phones ALL the time. Students are not on their textbook all the time. Think about that. And I’m not saying we should only do what students want to do. One of my favorite quotes is “the object of education isn’t to make students comfortable, it’s to make them successful.” But I do think leverage and engagement are useful."

Want to Start a Makerspace at School? Tips to Get Started

Want to Start a Makerspace at School? Tips to Get Started | Tecnologia, didattica ed educazione | Scoop.it
As the Maker Movement starts to gain momentum, schools that are trying to find ways to foster the do-it-yourself environment can learn a few lessons from another nexus in the universe: public libraries.

Dale Dougherty, founding editor and publisher of Make Magazine — and the de facto leader of the Maker Movement — has a vision to create a network of libraries, museums, and schools with what he calls “makerspaces” that draw on common resources and experts in each community. Libraries and museums, he said, are easier places to incorporate makerspaces than schools, because they have more space flexibility and they’re trying to attract teens with their programs.

“Schools have already got the kids,” Dougherty noted wryly, at the recent American Library Association Midwinter Meeting in Seattle. One day during the conference, dubbed Maker Monday, focused on the Maker Movement, which emphasizes learning by engaging in tech-related projects. Two packed sessions, one standing room only, were filled with librarians clearly fascinated by the potential of attracting teens (and even parents) to Maker activities in libraries.

Schools can learn from libraries that participated in the inaugural Maker Camps last summer. The librarians speaking at ALA proffered seven lessons that apply beyond libraries to schools and other potential makerspaces.

The Padagogy Wheel - It’s Not About The Apps, It’s About The Pedagogy - | Tecnologia, didattica ed educazione | Scoop.it
“ The Padagogy Wheel is designed to help educators think – systematically, coherently, and with a view to long term, big-picture outcomes – about how they use mobile apps in their teaching. The Padagogy Wheel is all about mindsets; it’s a way of thinking about digital-age education that meshes together concerns about mobile app features, learning transformation, motivation, cognitive development and long-term learning objectives. The Padagogy Wheel, though, is not rocket science. It is an everyday device that can be readily used by everyday teachers; it can be applied to everything from curriculum planning and development, to writing learning objectives and designing centered activities. The idea is for the users to respond to the challenges that the Wheel presents for their teaching practices, and to ask themselves the tough questions about their choices and methods.”

Stages of Being a Maker Learner - @JackieGerstein

Stages of Being a Maker Learner - @JackieGerstein | Tecnologia, didattica ed educazione | Scoop.it

"So what is making? I’ve proposed that the heart of making is creating new and unique things. I also realize that in order for this type of making to occur, there needs to be some scaffolding so that maker learners can develop a foundation of knowledge and skills. The end result, though should be maker learners creating new things by and for themselves. The ideas in this post have been sparked by the SAMR model. I see a similar pattern or progression with maker education:"

The Turtle Art project, and the concept of “doing” or “making” before any explicit instruction has been given, is part of the school’s attempt to shake up its teaching. Lighthouse Community Charter has to cover the same standard curriculum as district schools, so teachers have to choose carefully the times when they’ll spend a little more time and creativity on a difficult subject.

Informal approach to learning - let kids discover through exploration and tinkering
Ivon Prefontaine, PhD's curator insight, June 12, 2017 1:16 PM
Digital tools and software can play a role in learning and doing as discovery. Teaching can also involve solving problems without digital tools. John Dewey was pointing us in this direction regardless of tools available.

When indigenous curricula and provincial curricula are overlayed with each other, they move us beyond the classroom and digital tools.

The end of ‘just Google it’: Why students need to be digitally literate

The end of ‘just Google it’: Why students need to be digitally literate | Tecnologia, didattica ed educazione | Scoop.it
“With so much information readily available in a range of multimodal formats, from text to multimedia, apps and social networking, we need to blend technological learning and critical literacy together so that students can critically appraise the information that they are accessing. Teaching digital literacy is something that can be embedded into regular teaching in all subjects at all stages of education. To do that, it needs to be explicitly taught and reinforced by every teacher in every subject in a way that is appropriate for students.”

Curatorially Yours's curator insight, October 15, 2015 6:07 PM

A terrific article that explores why digital literacy skills are so essential. Not just device proficiency! Not just effective search skills! Our students need to think critically about what they view - this requires explicit teaching.

“ Making has finally made it in education. The grassroots movement that inspires learning through tinkering, trial and error, and problem solving is finally taking hold in classrooms around the world. And that’s great news to Dale Dougherty, executive chairman of Maker Media, founder of MAKE Magazine and a key player in the maker movement. But that doesn’t mean it’s time to sit back and declare victory. “We’ve been saying this should happen, and it’s happening right now,” Dougherty says. Education leaders are telling him that they’ve never seen anything like it — the collaboration, the excitement and the sense that making’s moment has arrived. “In some ways, it’s a counter-revolution to the standardized testing that’s been thrust on schools,” Dougherty explains.”
