Nationally Known Copyright Specialist Comes to Greenhills Library

Nationally Known Copyright Specialist Comes to Greenhills Library | TechTalkweekly | Scoop.it

Molly Kleinman, as a Special Assistant to the Dean of Libraries at U of M spoke at an after school workshop this week, on the responsibilities of users and creators of information. Since collaboration is at the heart of what folks call 21st Century Skills, a firm understanding of sharing and creating new content from others work is essential for educators. Most attendees came away with new understandings about obtaining permissions and attributing works when distributing information to their students. The entire presentation, along with Molly's slides will be available on the Library Page on Greenhouse.

Create Posters That Look Great

Create Posters That Look Great | TechTalkweekly | Scoop.it

Smore allows you to select design style, font, background, colors, link to content, and include images and media.

Block Posters is one of my secret weapons, a handy Web-based utility for making any good resolution image or flyer into a big printable poster. You simply upload an image, choose how many sheets wide you’d like it to be, print, trim, paste the pieces together, and you are ready to laminate (if you like) and display physically.

GlogsterEDU–allows students to create image and media-rich interactive web-based posters

ThingLink–allows users to tag, link, and share web-based images

BigHugeLabs–allows users to generate a variety of poster types–movie, motivational, magazine covers, etc.

Comic Life–it’s not free, but it’s reasonably priced and wonderful

Future Home of new GH Music Lab

Future Home of new GH Music Lab | TechTalkweekly | Scoop.it

This is the old music storage room. It's now empty and ready to be retooled into a music lab thanks to Neal Donato's back breaking efforts.  This will allow the ginormous MS music classes to break into smaller, more managable learning groups and increase digital competencies at both the MS without revamping the schedule. Many of our HS students are interested in recording and producing music. Protools on the lab machines will give them the the ability to produce professional quality recordings. We will be able to record concerts, offer electives in songwriting...the possibilities are unlimited! Lindsey Conlin has partnered up with both DITS and the Fine Arts Dept to help make this space a reality. It has become her Senior Project. Using existing equipment,  reconfiguring computers and a healthy dose of ingenuity, the lab should be open by May 24th. Keep your fingers crossed!

Coursera

Coursera | TechTalkweekly | Scoop.it

Lifelong learners everywhere start cheering.

I just added Coursera to our list of open educational resources. But in several exciting ways this one is very different.

Courses are free and are offered by top universities: Princeton, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UM Ann Arbor, and U of Pennsylvania. Where past efforts archived lengthy video lectures and offered little interaction, Coursera learners sign up for free courses on a platform that includes: chunked video lecture segments, quizzes, homework, deadlines, interactivities, check-ins, global forums, and peer review.

Here’s an introduction to Penn’s very tempting course, Modern and Contemporary American Poetry. https://www.coursera.org/#course/modernpoetry

TED Blog | Flip this lesson! A new way to teach with video from TED-Ed

TED Blog | Flip this lesson! A new way to teach with video from TED-Ed | TechTalkweekly | Scoop.it

TED has just unveiled a new education website tonight, TED Ed, different from the YouTube channel with the same name that they launched last month (actually, the domain name of today’s new site is ed.ted).

This new site, using the videos from that new education initiative and perhaps other TED videos, is supposed to let teachers create interactive quizzes that can be tracked. TED appears to have been seduced by the fashionable word of the day — “flipped classroom” — and is framing these teacher-created interactives as tools that can be used in that venue. But for the majority of us who have serious reservations about the feasibility of this strategy, this kind of site can be useful in the classroom. We should figure out how to post some of our Senior Projects on this!
