IDC: tablet shipments up 6.7 percent in Q3 2012, Apple's market share drops to 50.4 percent

IDC: tablet shipments up 6.7 percent in Q3 2012, Apple's market share drops to 50.4 percent | Technology - Thatway.eu | Scoop.it

Samsung may dominate Apple in smartphone market share, but the opposite is true for tablets. Third quarter figures from IDC suggest the tablet market grew by 6.7 percent during those three months, and 49.5 percent over the same period last year. Apple was responsible for over half of the 27.8 million shipments worldwide, but lost a significant amount of market share, dropping to 50.4 percent from 65.5 percent in the second quarter. IDC attributes this to consumers holding off for the iPad mini, but expects some of these procrastinators will choose Android tablets due to the relatively high entry price of $329 for the mini. Samsung was second on the leaderboard, shipping over five million tablets and increasing its market share to 18.4 percent, mainly driven by Galaxy Tab and Note 10.1 sales. Amazon and ASUS also had a solid quarter thanks to the Kindle Fires and Nexus 7, respectively, shipping around 2.5 million tablets a piece. Lenovo's presence in China meant it closed out the top five, with modest growth from the same period last year. Apple may still be the biggest player in the tablet market thanks to the iPad brand, but with the significant decline in market share this quarter, it seems IDC's predictions might slowly be coming true.

Ikea's Augmented-Reality Catalog Might Be the Company's Best-Made Product Yet

Ikea's Augmented-Reality Catalog Might Be the Company's Best-Made Product Yet | Technology - Thatway.eu | Scoop.it
We've already shared our favorite items from Ikea's 2013 product catalog, but what we didn't know was that as of July 31st, the catalog itself will be an interactive product of the latest augmented-reality technology.

iOS and Android users who download the Ikea catalog app, will be able to unlock video features, interactive experiences with products on the page, photo galleries and additional decorating inspiration.

Developed by the creative agency McCann, the AR app is a project that the Swedish build-it-yourself furniture empire has been working on for quite a while, since 2011 when they first expressed interset in bridging the print/digital divide. Linus Karlsson, Global Chief Creative Officer of McCann, explained to Wired that replacing the paper catalog with an entirely digital product wouldn't make sense, "If you had a magazine that had 211 million copies in circulation, you just would't end it. That would be crazy."

With this added digital layer, shopping Ikea's collection will become a little bit easier—an "X-ray" feature allows you to peer inside cabinets, for example, making a trip to the brick-and-mortar store potentially unnecessary.

Plastic Logic demoes flexible color display for e-readers (video) | Technology - Thatway.eu | Scoop.it

Plastic Logic has getting by with some eastern love since last year, when RUSNANO's $700 million investment helped the e-reader maker land its Plastic Logic 100 in Russian schools. The latest fruit of that partnership is a prototype of its first flexible color e-reader display, which delivers 4,000-plus hues at a resolution of 75 ppi. The screen contains some 1.2 million plastic transistors, and it's able to bend without distorting images thanks to a top filter and a 150-ppi display below that flex at the same rate. Skip past the break for a demo clip of the tech in action, appropriately featuring some Matryoshka dolls.

Chrome Passes IE as Most Used Web Browser | Technology - Thatway.eu | Scoop.it

According to the latest data from StatCounter, Chrome was showing up on a full third of the computers online during the month of July. IE came in a close second with 32%, and Firefox came in a distant third place with 23%. Safari claims a 7% market share, putting it far out of the game. And it looks like not even all Mac owners use it, because the last I heard Apple had an 8% to 11% market share.

This is the latest attempt by the government to provide access to all their information in one place. The new interface is essentially a search engine with a simple user interface which is similar to that of Google search; a box to ask a question and a few ‘popular’ links. Is this the UX direction all sites should be taking? How could this affect search engine rankings?
