Competitive intelligence & why I’m disappointed with myself on LinkedIn

And this is where LinkedIn has been clever, they have recognised this innate desire most of us have to be recognised and tapped right into it with ‘How you rank for profile views‘ However, this feature is more than just a talent competition, if you are a serious LinkedIn user, it represents an opportunity for you to really understand what your competition is doing, why they are coveting your clients and it allows you the opportunity to model their approach or take a different path – in short, it provides you with competitive intelligence that you’d struggle to obtain from any other source.

How Finding A Business Partner Is Awfully Similar To Finding A Spouse

How Finding A Business Partner Is Awfully Similar To Finding A Spouse | Technology,Social Media, | Scoop.it

Just like marriage, it takes time to find the right business partner.

The terms “work husband/wife” are frequently used because marriage and business partnerships are extremely relatable. Maintaining those relationships involves ongoing attention, change, and reflection over time.

Here are a few top tips to consider before tying the business knot:

Non-negotiables

Whether it is experience in a specific field, a certain degree or acquired skill set, a flexible schedule, or an unshakeable work ethic, these attributes cannot be compromised. Once this parameter is outlined it is easier to narrow down your search.

Performance Management: We Won’t Fix the Problem by Ignoring It

Performance Management: We Won’t Fix the Problem by Ignoring It | Technology,Social Media, | Scoop.it

To meet this goal, a performance management system must provide some way to determine how employees are performing relative to their co-workers. Yet there is currently a trend in HR to “fix” performance management by eliminating the use of methods that compare employees based on performance.

This makes no sense since this is the very thing senior business leaders want from performance management!

The 2 performance management methods:

When I ask business leaders in large companies what they want from performance management systems, the answer usually includes “identify the top performers in the company.”

Graeme Reid's curator insight, August 5, 2014 8:29 PM

If we want to fix performance management, we must create methods that accurately classify employees based on past performance in a way that maximizes their future performance and retention.  Rating employees to fit a bell-curve distribution is nonsensical, but identifying your top 10% of performers makes a lot of sense.

Ian Berry's curator insight, August 7, 2014 1:47 AM

Performance management like people management is dead. The question to ask of all performance systems Does our system inspire and make it simple for people to bring their best to their work? Any answer other than a resounding yes means system must be improved.

The most intelligent organizations are overcoming battlegrounds and silos to maximize their return on customer intelligence. They're insisting on the "dog wagging the tail" by instilling customer experience context for all actions and decisions company-wide. They're applying customer intelligence to innovate the full customer experience "bundle". And they're equipping organizational learning by sharing, showing actionable patterns, focusing on what customers are trying to get done, and being proactive in enabling customers to love the company. .

Competitive Review, the Path to Imitation

Competitive Review, the Path to Imitation | Technology,Social Media, | Scoop.it

Focusing on your competitors' strategies will only lead to imitation and mediocrity. Instead, marketers should take a risk and take the path toward innovation and success. By focusing on your competitors you are fundamentally missing the point. That point being that you are trying to reach and influence your audience (customers, prospects, policy-makers, whoever they may be). You are definitely not trying to reach and influence your competitors. Yes, your competitors are oftentimes trying to reach the same audience as your organization, and the truth of it is that sometimes they get it right, and sometimes they get it wrong. But irrespective, you definitely don't want to adopt your competitor's strategy. How is adopting your competitor's strategies going to give you a point of differentiation? How is it going to infuence the audience to make a positive decision in your favor, rather than your competitor? It won't. It just won't.

'Indefinite Idling,' 'Redirected,' And 46 Other Euphemisms We Use In Place Of 'Fired' | Technology,Social Media, | Scoop.it

George Orwell wrote that "political language has to consist largely of euphemism, question-begging, and sheer cloudy vagueness."
For the "1984" author, euphemism was a method by which powerful people cloaked violent acts. The more vaguely you described something violent, the less awful the violence sounds. That trend has carried over to corporate America and Silicon Valley, where CEOs and HR departments invent all sorts of creative language to cloak the fact that people are getting fired.
