A Proposal to Buy Out OverDrive | Backtalk

A Proposal to Buy Out OverDrive | Backtalk | librarytech | Scoop.it

OverDrive is gearing up for expansion via a new $5-million-dollar-plus “world headquarters” with 300 employees expected in time, some 95,000 square feet, a 12-acre campus, a pond and two indoor basket courts. Shouldn’t librarians have a voice in such spending decisions, which could influence content costs? Or should they tolerate what could become de facto privatization and perhaps eventually get cut out altogether?

To me this was like when it was revealed that Jack in the Box had horse meat in their hamburgers: It made you feel somehow unclean for having heard about it after the fact whether you ate a burger OR even a chicken sandwich. You knew that Jack's wasn't high class food going in, so in a way it didn't surprise you, but the bad that you expected was the fat and the salt the inspectors told you about. You had faith that the inspectors would have caught the fact that they were grinding up Trigger while they were checking the meat for fat content! When they didn't "protect you" you just had to wonder if your faith is really enough to protect you from anything?
