What do objects reveal about design and the past? KS3 Art & Design
Angela Gizoria's insight:

This WebQuest is a winner for the Design and Technology aspect of the Technologies Curriculum. It is suitable for Year 4 - 8 students. It is inquiry oriented. By engaging in the prescribed activities in this WebQuest students  investigage the design processes of everyday objects. They learn about the history and factors that determine the design processes of their selected object. Students are then challenged to design an object that meets good design requirements of function and attractiveness.

Students can engage in this inquiry individually or in small groups. The general capabilities of the Design and technology component of the Technologies Curriculum could easily be achieved through this inquiry. History, Art, Science and Language capabilities capabilities are woven into this inquiry WebQuest.

Check this out if you are teaching an upper primary class!!

Spell Up. Speak to play and build up your English.

Spell Up. Speak to play and build up your English. | Inquiries into innovations | Scoop.it

This is a great new game from Google which helps students develop their vocabulary through spelling and pronunciation. Using Chrome, students can actually speak to the computer and listen to the pronunciation of the words as they build a word tower. They can even listen to a speaking dictionary telling them what the words mean. This should get your students working autonomously to develop their own vocabulary and if they sign in they can track and share their results.

Powerhouse Museum | PotBiz: the innovation game

Angela Gizoria's insight:

This is an interactive game for two players. The players in this game aim to turn an innovative idea into a profitable business by making a series of decisions about product type, its design, the materials used to make the product and financial capital needed to turn their idea into a reality.

This game advocates important concepts of sustainability for young children. It helps them consider the notion of choosing biodegradable materials for the benefit of environmental sustainability. This is a useful resource to use in consolidating learning in topics such as "recycling" and waste management.

With the design and technology focus, the game incorporates Art, Language, Health, SOSE and a bit of Maths and Commerce.

PotBiz is an interesting game which even older student will enjoy.

Design Technology Projects - Packaging

This Packaging and Other Structures excersise concerns itself with
bag handles - specifically, which different types of handles exist and how they differ.
Angela Gizoria's insight:

This will make a great "Mini Inquiry" unit of work on the design and structure of shopping bag handles. It is a relevant real world unit for many students who would have had experiences with a variety of shopping bags before. It is aslo ideal because every child will be able to bring in at least a shoping bag.

The opportunities for rich learning through this inquiry are numerous. Students can categorise the the bags by handle types and make, generate authentic discussions, experiment weights bag handles can hold up, deconstruct the bags and evaluate how the handles have been fixed to the bags, identify faulty ones and design their own "super handle" for their shopping bags.

The unit has a technology focus but combines concepts from other curriculum areas including Art, Language and Mathematics. Years 4 or 5 students will really enjoy learning through this Inquiry Unit!
