The Fairy Tale Shed

Teaching Ideas The opening shots and panorama of the village present an ideal opportunity to use rich description.  This setting could be used for children to create their own stories in.  Perhaps...
Beci Jay's insight:

General fairytale 'filler' ideas to match if the teacher had a theme going for all curriculum work in any given term or semester. These activities promote higher-order thinking, creativity and initiative for extension work. Many of the ideas match 'thinking hat' categories, too, which is ideal for suiting all learning styles and diversity within the classroom.

School Newspaper :: Peterbrook Primary SchoolShirleySolihull

School Newspaper :: Peterbrook Primary SchoolShirleySolihull | Technology Education - Fairytale Journalism | Scoop.it
Beci Jay's insight:

I really like the way this online newspaper has been set out to disseminate school news (like a newsletter), but I believe it could be improved upon. Better fonts and more professional layouts and pictures could make this newsletter a more visually appealing publication. My idea for how this could be used is to have the students critique it, to improve upon it to meet the needs of the school community (inclusive of aesthetic features).

The most relevant curriculum outcome aligned to this activity as per the scope and sequence would be:

4.2 Investigate how well information systems
meet home, classroom and community needs
and envisage new applications for existing
information systems

(ACARA, 2013).

Skrappy - Scrapbook & Photo Album for Digital Scrapbooking

Get Skrappy - Scrapbook & Photo Album for Digital Scrapbooking on the App Store. See screenshots and ratings, and read customer reviews.
Beci Jay's insight:

I just love using this application. I have used it within special schools and mainstream settings for a range of different purposes, but mostly to keep an anecdotal record and reflection of student learning. It is really brought to life with video, sound, picture and text functions, which allows students to reflect on their learning each day. Of course, this is really only relevant if the unit is implemented in a school with access to iPad technology, so that is a limitation. It could also be used to make draft copies of a school newspaper, though there are better programs for that purpose.

Using this program for reflection and anecdotal record of learning allows students to fulfill:

4.6 Design and implement simple visual
programs with user input and branching

(ACARA, 2013).

Is being “green” and supporting newspapers hypocritical?

Is being “green” and supporting newspapers hypocritical? | Technology Education - Fairytale Journalism | Scoop.it
I always get fired up when I get in debates regarding the implications of newspapers going away. I don't understand people who believe that the downfall of the newspaper will mean the ...
Beci Jay's insight:

This article, while its target audience is adults, can be compressed into 'for' and 'against' dot points for younger children when looking at issues of sustainability in newsletter/newspaper production and dissemination. The students could complete a concept map about what their existing thoughts are on recycling, newspaper production and other solutions. This aligns with technology curriculum:

• Investigate and evaluate the range of
technologies, materials, systems, tools and
equipment that support local community
needs with consideration
of sustainability
• Identify the factors that influence the design
and use of common technologies

(ACARA, 2013)

This gets students thinking about sustainability and the accountability of different people in society, and how there are alternatives to problems posed by different production processes.

Make a Video. Amazing Animated Video Maker - GoAnimate. | Technology Education - Fairytale Journalism | Scoop.it
Make a video online for free with GoAnimate! Make videos for YouTube and Facebook, create business and educational videos, make animated e-cards and more!
Beci Jay's insight:

The students can use GoAnimate to create and represent digital information. This can be used for class or individual projects, and it aligns with the theme of this curated collection, as well as the technology curriculum:

-Use digital technologies to manipulate data
and information

As well as the scope and sequence:

4.1 Recognise a variety of different types of data
and explore different representations for the
same data

(ACARA, 2013; ACARA, 2013).

This could be tied in with the comic strip generator (comic creator) also found in this curated collection to 'explore different representations for the same data.'

Wildwood School News

Wildwood School Skokie IL produced , directed and acted in their own news show.
Beci Jay's insight:

This is a very interesting use of technology. Here, you can see how these students have identified common forms of digital information that local communities create and use, as well as identifying how some forms of digital information are transmitted and their intended

purposes (ACARA, 2013)

Through this, they have chosen a sustainable and contemporary solution to the dissemination of news stories, one that reduces usage of paper and the cutting down of trees. It also satisfies the general capabilities of creative/critical thinking, and puts creative use to ICT (ACARA, 2013). My only apprehension about this use of technology is that perhaps it is not age-appropriate for grade 3 students. Would they realistically be able to co-ordinate such a sophisticated task? Perhaps the task could be scaled down in its complexity to be more appropriate.

Publishers National Environment Bureau » More sustainable production

Publishers National Environment Bureau » More sustainable production | Technology Education - Fairytale Journalism | Scoop.it
Beci Jay's insight:

This article has been chosen to provide information for sustainable newspaper production. This article discusses more sustainable materials, which could set the momentum for discussions with students about different ways in which socially responsible citizens could produce and distribute newspapers without destroying the environment. For example, they could test the sustainability of different materials for printing, or explore online newspaper production. In addition, students could look at recycling vs prevention. This article would need to be condensed to be more 'age-appropriate' for the purpose.

WebQuest: Fairy Tale News: created with Zunal WebQuest Maker

WebQuest: Fairy Tale News: created with Zunal WebQuest Maker | Technology Education - Fairytale Journalism | Scoop.it
A resource page for Educational Technology
Beci Jay's insight:

This WebQuest is awesome! I would like to use this as a basis to create my own task for students to design their own newspaper, however, I wonder how open-ended it would be and how much scope for problem solving it would allow. This WebQuest itself requires modifications to be able to design the task how I would want it, but it is a good starting point.

The way that I would develop the WebQuest would provide opportunities to develop and evaluate ideas for digital solutions (creating a sustainable newspaper) and exploration of alternatives (such as online newspaper programs), and the students could communicate these by completing their own newspaper project using appropriate digital tools. Their planning process could be facilitated by applications such as Skrappy and Popplet, as shown in past Scoops. This matches the curriculum draft shape for technology:

-Generate and evaluate ideas for digital
solutions using systematic exploration of
alternatives, communicating these using
drawings, discussion and appropriate digital
tools (ACARA, 2013).

Online newspaper and magazine software | ProsePoint

Online newspaper and magazine software | ProsePoint | Technology Education - Fairytale Journalism | Scoop.it
Beci Jay's insight:

ProsePoint is a really neat online application that students can use to publish their own online newspaper or magazine. It also doubles as a content management system. However, it only has a free trial, so teachers would need to gain a licence to use it for the long-term, which is a limitation, as many schools do not have the resources for expensive software packages.

Using a system like ProsePoint fulfills the following technology curriculum outcomes:

4.2 Investigate how well information systems
meet home, classroom and community needs
and envisage new applications for existing
information systems

(ACARA, 2013).

It may be useful for the teacher to use the same principles of design that this program uses, and emulate the same in a basic office package program such as Microsoft Word.

Popplet | Technology Education - Fairytale Journalism | Scoop.it
Beci Jay's insight:

A useful resource for students to create concept maps and organise their ideas about learning, thus fulfilling the technology curriculum:

4.4 Use a range of digital systems and
peripherals for diverse purposes, and transmit
different types of data

A resource such as Popplet can be used for a range of purposes across the curriculum.

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences - Kids Pages - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle | Technology Education - Fairytale Journalism | Scoop.it
Beci Jay's insight:

While this resource doesn't entirely relate to 'fairytale journalism', it does relate to sustainability. This resource could be used to inspire students to start thinking about different ways to 'reduce, re-use, recycle', which of course, will eventually be applied to sustainable newspaper production. I am putting this here as a related resource for similar curriculum ideas and units.

ReadWriteThink: Student Materials: Comic Creator

The Comic Creator is an interactive tool that invites students to compose their own comic strips for a variety of contexts.
Beci Jay's insight:

I really like this simple, online program. Students can use it to create their own comic strip, which fulfills the following technology curriculum:

-Use digital technologies to manipulate data
and information

Additionally, this resource also allows students to create and express ideas, which links to the general capability for literacy (ACARA, 2013). Students can use this program to create and experiment with their own comic strip, which can be used as part of 'fairytale journalism.'

Fairy_Tale_Reporter.pdf

Beci Jay's insight:

This article provides a list of relevant vocabulary and activities for the 'English' component of this unit. As the students will also be exploring sustainable alternatives for dissemination of such information, this is where the 'technology' curriculum is fulfilled:

• Investigate and evaluate the range of
technologies, materials, systems, tools and
equipment that support local community
needs with consideration of sustainability (ACARA, 2013).

The fairytale topic supports the learning in technology by providing a topic and a framework to base the learning around.

St Luke's C.E. Primary School - Fairytale News Report Videos

St Luke's C.E. Primary School - Fairytale News Report Videos | Technology Education - Fairytale Journalism | Scoop.it

This 'Fairy Tale News Report' website is absolutely relevant to the ideas I had for my own theme. I particularly like the way in which the students at this school have used multi modal technologies (such as Windows Movie Maker) to represent their ideas. However, I would expand on this and have the students come up with ways in which they could physically organise their newspaper to construct a layout, which could then be transferred to a computer source such as Windows Movie Maker. This draws upon collaboration, discussion and problem solving skills.
