10 Reasons Why I Will Continue to Give my Children Handheld Devices

10 Reasons Why I Will Continue to Give my Children Handheld Devices | Technology | Scoop.it

"Last week the Huffington Post ran this article titled 10 Reasons Why Handheld Devices Should be Banned for Children Under the Age of 12. As an educator who advocates for the intentional and appropriate use of technology, I could go on about this forever. But instead I’m writing here as a mother.

Here are my 10 reasons why I will continue giving my children handheld devices, and all other forms of technology as well."

Intel is on to the wearable technology craze in a big way. You may remember Intel from making every computer chip ever made, but they are glomming on to making smart shirts.  It will be packed to the gills with sensors that monitor nearly every aspect of your health, from your vital signs to your emotional states. this information can then be beamed to your smartphone, tablet or what have you. A shirt that tracks vitals seems much more convenient then an armband, considering you have to wear a shirt(and shoes) to get service at most businesses. The battery of the shirt doesn’t like to get wet so you’d be tasked with removing it before doing laundry.

One of the problems with this article's premise is the way technology is being used by the teachers.  For example, "The experiment showed that, regardless of the kind or duration of the computer use, the disconnected students performed better on a post-lecture quiz."  My argument is that computers should probably not be open for a lecture.  They could be open for a discussion with a back-channel or for more purpose-driven tech.  But the way it is being used or accepted by teachers as use by students sounds haphazard and ready for disaster.

According to a report from Intel and digital think tank L2, not yet. While 75% of consumers are aware of the trend, fewer than 10% actually want to wear it, and only 2% own any wearable tech at all. But, L2, Intel, and the rest of the tech behemoths are riding on the predicted success of fashion-world partnerships intended to make the mainstream more comfortable with technology like Google Glass.

Once these products are out on the market, we'll be able to see if wearables really will be the next big thing in both  fashion and technology, says the paper. - Which is typical Trial & Error Engineering / Product Development and it is very $$$$
