Finding purpose for 3D printers in schools - District Administration

Finding purpose for 3D printers in schools - District Administration | Technology and Writing in the Middle School Classroom | Scoop.it

"A 3D printer company with a strong education background can be invaluable to school leaders hoping to help students turn abstract concepts into working models, says Johan Broer, a MakerBot spokesman.

Each printer company has its own school-focused offerings. A hands-on learning guide and bundled kits along with a curriculum could integrate engineering concepts with core academic knowledge in science, math, art and 3D printing technology.

No matter what printer manufacturer is chosen, CIOs have to do their homework. Things to consider include:"

Capture the Learning: Crafting the Maker Mindset - Edutopia | Technology and Writing in the Middle School Classroom | Scoop.it
You've heard some good stuff about the maker movement such as how making helps students learn through embodied cognition, creates a mindset that's empowering, and builds creative confidence. You're interested in crafting some maker lessons but don't know where to start or how to do something that works in your classroom. Or perhaps you're worried that you don't have time to do a long, involved project. How do you still teach the Common Core or cover the required curriculum? These simple steps will get you started.

What can educators expect from iOS 9? - That #EdTech Guy's Blog

What can educators expect from iOS 9? - That #EdTech Guy's Blog | Technology and Writing in the Middle School Classroom | Scoop.it
With the announcement today of an Apple Special Event scheduled to take place on September 9th 2015, rumours have been making the rounds on the Internet for months as to what new products we can expect to see unveiled. One thing we can be pretty certain about is the release of iOS 9. It was first unveiled and demoed at WWDC 2015, with a full release touted for fall of this year.

I’ve been playing with with the iOS 9 beta on a secondary iPad Air for a couple of weeks now to get to grips with it ahead of this. It’s not radically different in the way iOS 7 was, however what it does is make the operating system feel even more polished and refined. In the main, there are lots of features which have each been made a bit better. However this adds up to make a noticeable difference! Rather than focus on all of them (there are just too many), I’ll focus on some of the key new features and improvements and in particular what they may bring to iPad classrooms.

This is truly a great tool in my estimation, but theory and reality also collide with technology. If you are not 1:1 then the potential of the app is not getting used in the best way that it can.

Shoot, Edit, and Share Videos With the Loopster iPad App | Technology and Writing in the Middle School Classroom | Scoop.it

"Loopster is a video editing tool that I first tried as a web app last fall. Recently, I learned that Loopster has a free iPad app. The free iPad app offers all of the same features that are available in the web version of the service. The Loopster iPad app provides a four track editor. There are tracks for video and images, transitions, sounds, and text. You can import images and videos from your iPad’s camera roll or shoot a new video with the app and edit it. On the video editing track you can trim clips and combine clips. On the text track you can add speech bubbles and other text effects. Loopster has a slow motion effect that is available on the iPad app too."

Here's How to Use the Two New iPad Multitasking Features in iOS 9 - PASTE

Here's How to Use the Two New iPad Multitasking Features in iOS 9 - PASTE | Technology and Writing in the Middle School Classroom | Scoop.it
If you have an iPad, then you are in luck. With the iOS 9 public beta and the public release this fall, you’ll be able to take multitasking on the iPad to the next level.

Before iOS 9, multitasking on the iPad was a hassle. Users had to switch from app to app in order to get work done. Reading something in Safari and want to make notes? You needed to double tap on the Home button and then switch over the Notes app to jot them down.

Now, Apple has made it easier to do so with Split View and Slide Over.

A Student Maker and the Birth of a Startup - Edutopia

A Student Maker and the Birth of a Startup - Edutopia | Technology and Writing in the Middle School Classroom | Scoop.it
I always felt trapped in school, with teachers telling me what to do and feeding me information that did not make sense. Honestly, I hated school and rarely paid attention or did homework. Obviously, I was mad when my mother forced me to go to my middle school's Summer Maker Camp. It sounded extremely boring. More school in the summer? I think not.

Within the first hour of camp, the teachers presented us with a challenge: Create a project related to something you love, incorporate some type of technology, and possibly start a business around it. I never did anything like this in school before. It was open-ended, and I could do it my own way, instead of sitting at a desk and being told to open to page 84. This excited me. I could work on a project that I chose!

Valuable #Lessons from My First #Makerspace Year | Knowledge Quest @DianaLRendina | Technology and Writing in the Middle School Classroom | Scoop.it
When I first started my makerspace at Stewart Middle Magnet School back in January of 2014, I was figuring everything out as I went along.  The term was still brand new, I couldn’t find any maker sessions at conferences, and there were only a handful of other school libraries sharing about their makerspaces.  Armed with a couple of books on the growing Maker Education Movement and a dream to create an engaging environment in my library,  I gathered some supplies, put them out there, and waited to see what would happen.  My ideas and philosophy were constantly growing and evolving as we tried new activities and formats at my school.  Some experiments worked; some failed miserably.  But I learned from each and every one as our makerspace grew into an integral part of our library culture.  Looking back on the last year and a half, I’ve realized that there’s several essential lessons I’ve learned in getting our makerspace going. Hopefully they can help save you some stress (and reassure you that everything will be awesome).
