Coding for Kindergarteners - Edutopia

Coding for Kindergarteners - Edutopia | Technology and Teaching | Scoop.it
Last year at this time, I was trying not to think about kindergarteners. I was still teaching ninth grade English and had just accepted a job teaching technology to K-5. I was excited about the challenge, and I knew that I'd bitten off more than I could chew.

Developing the tech curriculum challenged me to teach programming or at least computational thinking at each elementary grade level. Our school is mid-pivot in technology -- we're in our second year of a middle school 1:2 iPad program, our first year of having a cart of iPads available for elementary, and our last year of two PC labs for the students to use (next year we'll have only one lab). Knowing this, I wanted to design a program that mostly used tablet-based tools.

William Griffin's curator insight, December 7, 2014 9:04 PM

The idea of teaching children how to code is a great one.  Technology has rapidly changed the world and all of it stems from coding.  Just like most skills, the sooner its learned, the more time it can be mastered, and ultimately effectiveness is maximized.

“How do you keep students engaged and on task?"

“How do you keep students engaged and on task?" | Technology and Teaching | Scoop.it
“How do you keep students engaged and on task?” I am frequently asked this question when I train teachers on blended learning models. The concern implied in this question is that if I am not working directly with students that they will immediately be off task or disruptive. In actuality, classroom management has never been a big issue for me. In part, I credit my lesson design for keeping them interested, engaged, and on task. I blend a mix of online and offline work that allows students opportunities to self-pace through activities, work collaboratively with their peers, and make key decisions about how they learn.

Implications Of Learning Theories On Instructional Design

Implications Of Learning Theories On Instructional Design | Technology and Teaching | Scoop.it
The world of Instructional Design has evolved over the years. Influences from various learning theory movements like behaviorism, cognitivism, and social learning have constructed a foundation which acts as pillars of successful approaches. While each theory includes specific focal points with regards to how learning occurs—either by behavioral response or knowledge acquisition—they have contributed unique perspectives on learning as a whole and are responsible for how the field of Instructional Design has changed over time.

10 Characteristics Of A Highly Effective Learning Environment

10 Characteristics Of A Highly Effective Learning Environment | Technology and Teaching | Scoop.it

"The reality is, there is no single answer because teaching and learning are awkward to consider as single events or individual “things.” This is all a bunch of rhetoric until we put on our white coats and study it under a microscope, at which point abstractions like curiosity, authenticity, self-knowledge, and affection will be hard to pin down."
