Since this is becoming very important to what we do with the Common Core, this seems a good read.

Changing literacies for a digital future.

David Cook's curator insight, August 7, 2014 10:34 PM

I found this to be a lot of bark with no bite.  But that's may be because I'm already sold on the need for digital literacy in education, and am much more interested in reading about specific content, frameworks, curriculum, etc.

Al mejor estilo MOOC (Massive Online Open Course) Yotube publica cursos online.

wanderingsalsero's curator insight, May 31, 2013 10:27 PM

I WILL be taking this.  Sounds like a great idea.  I'm convinced that a lot of the stuff the 'gurus' put in their courses (the ones they charge for) is freely available somewhere.  In the case of YouTube, I know for a fact that they publish a LOT of good stuff that's totally free....e.g. the YouTube Creators Playbook (that I found over a year ago).

I am also convinced that understand just this one simple, well-known tool of YouTube is (all by itself) a highly marketable skill.  I'll bet if you walked into 10 businesses and just said, "Hi, my name is Art Williams.  I'm a YouTube consultant.  Are you doing anything with YouTube to build your business?" it would lead to several people expressing interest.

I think the key to making that kind of prospecting work would be to have several different 'products' or services available.  Some people will need to be nurtured for a bit before they finally give you some real business....kinda like going into a Denny's and ordering an iced-tea first and then deciding that you really are hungry.

Ed Hill's curator insight, January 6, 2014 5:13 PM

Video is a fast and involving way to build engaging content. Here's an online course from YouTube.

Are you drowning in e-books? Here’s a solution.

Are you drowning in e-books? Here’s a solution. | Technology and Education Resources | Scoop.it

"Why is that? The best explanation, as far as I can tell, is that book publishing itself has exploded—e-book publishing especially—now that we all live in the Age of the ePub. But author Karen Dionne wrote an interesting piece for the Huffington Post last week that offers a decent solution to the drowning-in-books problem: It’s called an author collective."

A global look at pedagogies for 21st century skills

A global look at pedagogies for 21st century skills | Technology and Education Resources | Scoop.it

Disconnects between policy mandates/supports and desired practice were found in most of the schools and all of the systems in our sample. For example, teachers were often being asked to innovate while being incented and judged solely by measures of the facts that students had acquired through traditional means, or given ICT to use without related curricular materials and models for ways to use it powerfully and effectively in subject matter learning. It was rare that teachers experienced standards, curriculum, professional development, assessments, and incentives that all aligned to support the development of students’ 21st century skills.

Many clear points within the article...Education is messy.

Ivon Prefontaine, PhD's curator insight, July 11, 2013 12:18 PM

It is not the desired practice which is disconnected, but more an issue of did policy makers actually go into classrooms and have conversations with teachers.

I like some of these ideas. I'm thinking we could have students make podcast booktalks and have QR codes linking to them in the books or on a display or around the school. Hmm...kids can't use their phones at school, yet. Well, I can always put links to them in our catalog and on the website.

The Gamification of Reading | ALSC Blog

The Gamification of Reading | ALSC Blog | Technology and Education Resources | Scoop.it

Our world is changing at a fast pace through our increasing usage of mobile devices, media applications, and new technology. The way we learn and think is also changing to accommodate our new environments. There has been a lot of talk recently about screen time and children. Some see it as beneficial and some see it as harmful. Hopefully, more research will be coming forward on the issue, but from what I have read it is the engagement and interaction keywords that keep standing out in every argument on both sides of the issue. Applying gamification to reading seems to be an opportunity for us to make things interesting for a new generation of readers. Some of us are already doing this in our summer reading programs by using game boards instead of reading logs.

This is how I see gamification…
