Nuggety | Find Things on the Web | technologies | Scoop.it
John Dalziel's insight:

Make a list of favourite websites on any topic and Nuggety will generate a search list.
A search list is a powerful way to search many websites from one page.
With Nuggety it is simple to create a vertical search for something specific, like computer hardware.
If users know of several websites for searching and buying computer hardware, they can build a search list that others can use as well.

It’s a very useful guide, providing an overview for non-specialists of the 2014 Computing curriculum in clear non-geeky language.
Initial Teacher Trainers, and/or Practitioners, trying to prepare future teachers, or themselves, to deliver the new computing and coding requirements, such guidance is very welcome right now.

quizsocket

quizsocket | technologies | Scoop.it
John Dalziel's insight:

A new tool developed to enable practitioners to quickly gather feedback from learners.
Quiz Socket enables them, the learners, to respond to questions via their cell phones, tablets, and laptops.
A unique quiz code is assigned to the practitioner who in turn, gives that quiz code to their learners to enter on the QuizSocket website.
Practitioners can then deliver multiple choice questions to learners either...
verbally or
by posting them on a whiteboard
...controlling the pace of the quiz by simply clicking "next question" to move the quiz along.
Quiz Socket doesn't require users to register and they can get a quiz up & running on the spur of the moment. Quiz Socket could be useful for running a quick prior knowledge assessment or as a quick exit ticket activity.
Note: Quiz Socket doesn't have the advanced options provided by Socrative and/or Infuse Learning.

Even if learners don't have any interest in fashion design, showing them a clip or two from this series could be good way to get them to start thinking about how mathematics appears in career fields that they might not expect.
Functional Skills may be more engaging for learners if they are challenged to find other careers that incorporate mathematics even though it might not be obvious.

Our Little Earth

Our Little Earth | technologies | Scoop.it

Current Events; News; World News for Learners

John Dalziel's insight:

Our Little Earth is a great international online newspaper aimed at younger learners but, suitable for a much wider age group. It's delivered every two weeks directly to a subscribers inbox of their email and best of all, it is free!
Past editions of Our Little Earth can be found on the site for learners to read and explore.
Each issue can help learners stay informed about what current events are happening in the world around them.
- Every edition has a map showing students where the news came from for the issue.
- Articles are easy for learners to read
- Articles offer enough background information that learners can make connections to the text and better understand it.
Our Little Earth is an excellent source for Functional Skills and other learners to read just-in-time, non-fiction text, at a level that is accessible to them.
Encourage Learners to read through a story-a-day in Our Little Earth. It's an excellent starting point for learners to...
- fact check,
- make connections, and
- confirm the reliability of a source.
There is always something fresh as the News is current, relevant and touches enough transdisciplinary themes that learners can make connections to other reading and learning they are doing.
Learners will, I'm sure, become more informed, and as such they will be able to better articulate things about their world.
Note: Using the search feature helps learners dig even deeper into events and themes. What happened, this month, a year ago?

FunBrain

FunBrain | technologies | Scoop.it

FunBrain is the #1 site for online educational games for learners of all ages. (math, grammar, science, spelling, history)

John Dalziel's insight:

Funbrain offers several interactive educational games for use with IWBs as well as online books and comics. The games cover a range of subjects.
Funbrain contains more than 100 fun, interactive games that develop skills in maths, reading, and literacy.
A bonus for some, there are also books and comics available to read.
Many games are Flash-based and so are not iPad-friendly, unless you've added Photon Browser, but there are resources on Funbrain that will work on an iPad as well.
It would be nice if there was a “full screen” button to make them bigger, and so easier to see on an IWB.
Users can play with page zoom in their browser settings to get round this.
Functional skills practitioners should take a look around to see if there’s anything they can use.
Games are grouped by subject and also by grade, which can help to narrow things down.
