The whole aim is to share so that others can discover useful tools to enhance their current practice..

Draw.Chat - Virtual Classroom/Real-time collaboration

Draw.Chat - Virtual Classroom/Real-time collaboration | technologies | Scoop.it
Draw.Chat is a free, anonymous, online drawing board. You can create your chat room with one click - without any registration. Every whiteboard has a unique, randomly generated URL which you can send to other people to start draw online.
John Dalziel's insight:
Looking for ways to hold remote, on-line...
  - tutoring? and/or
  - meetings to plan presentations? and/or
  - meetings to edit project outlines etc.?
Today's post may provide a solution...
Draw Chat is a "free" service that allows anyone to create a video chat over a whiteboard, PDF, image, or map.
To use Draw Chat just...
  - visit the site and
  - click "Start New Whiteboard." Once the whiteboard launches users will have the option to enable access to their webcam and microphone.
  - Send the link, assigned to the whiteboard, to have others join the whiteboard video conference.
Draw Chat allows users to...
  - draw or type on a shared whiteboard.
  - upload a PDF or an image to annotate on the whiteboard.
A fourth option for drawing on Draw Chat is to import the URL for a Google Map and draw on that map.
NOTE: Users are randomly assigned a username in the video and text chat which is an odd thing and can be a source of confusion unless you're using the video conferencing aspect of Draw Chat.
It's FREE so give it a go!

Timelinely : include pictures as well as annotations on video clips

Timelinely : include pictures as well as annotations on video clips | technologies | Scoop.it
Create interactive video stories on Timelinely
John Dalziel's insight:
The option to include pictures as well as annotations on video clips, would be a bonus for Educators and/or Learners.  A relatively new tool for annotating videos that are hosted on YouTube, allows users to do just that.
Timelinely makes it easy to get started.
Users just have to...
  - copy a YouTube URL into the Timelinely homepage
  - click get started
...a new screen appears that allows users to add tags or annotations to the timeline of the video.
NOTE: users can do this while the video plays or they can simply jump to a place on the video to add annotations.
Annotations can include...
  - text or
  - images.
NOTE: users will have to create an account in order to save and share their work.
They can create an account by using their Google or Facebook account, or by signing up with any email address.
Educators and/or Learners can share their annotated version of a video via email and social media.
Timelinely is working on a feature that will hopefully enable Educators and/or Learners to embed their annotated versions of the clips.
Well worth trying and, with embedding arriving in the future, a tool to enhance the use of video clips.

First News - UK’s newspaper for young people | technologies | Scoop.it
The weekly newspaper for young people
John Dalziel's insight:
News reading is an important literacy practice that, among other things...
  - helps learners become responsible citizens,
  - raises their critical media awareness, and
  - connects them to the global world.
As educators, we need to make sure our learners have the tools and know-how that can enable them to critically evaluate news sources and determine their credibility.
It's important to provide learners with news sources that are age-appropriate and learner-friendly. Sources that provide news stories curated specifically for a young audience.
First News is the UK’s only newspaper for young people. First News, started in 2006 by Sarah and Steve Thomson with editor Nicky Cox, has always been independently owned and has no political affiliations.
First News aims to inform and engage younger learners but ultimately fuel their curiosity and encourage them to form their own opinions.

The "real life" context found in the videos, in the Math in Real Life series, is broad in nature and like most TED-Ed videos, could make nice extensions to an educators learning environment instruction. e.g. educators will find lessons about how maths is used to guide ships and calculating rates of travel in space.

Quick Capture - a great Chrome extension that educators, and/or learners, can use to take screenshots of their current page(s) - Chrome Web Store | technologies | Scoop.it
Quick capture your current page screen.
John Dalziel's insight:
Quick Capture is a great Chrome extension that educators, and/or learners, can use to take screenshots of their current page(s).
Quick Capture offers users 4 screenshot options...
  - capture a visible part of the page,
  - capture the entire page,
  - delayed capture which gives you 3 seconds before the capture takes place and
  - capture a local image
The way this Quick Capture works is straight forward.
  - First it needs to be installed it on the Chrome browser; Next once users are on a web page they want to take a screenshot of
  - click on the tool’s icon on the top right hand corner and choose which screen capture mode they want. They will be directed to a page where they can...
  - edit and work on the screenshot.
One particular feature I like about this app is full-page screen capture. With a single click, Quick Capture generates a screenshot of the whole page, not just what can be seen.
Quick Capture also offers a wide variety of tools to annotate and edit your screenshots. Users can
  - add... text, shapes, arrows,
  - edit using a pencil or brush,
  - crop specific parts,
  - add emojis
...and much more.
Once the screenshot is ready users can save it to their...
  - Google Drive,
  - local hard drive,
or...
  - send it to Slack or
  - save it to Quick Capture.
NOTE: Users can save their captures to Quick Capture either as a guest without having to sign up in which case their captures are stored for 10 days only or they can sign in with Facebook or Google and save their screenshots with a free storage for 30 days.
I download my captures straight to my computer’s local drive. Ideal for Chromebooks and well worth a closer look!

Photos for Class: The quick and safe way to find and cite images for class! | technologies | Scoop.it
The World’s easist way to search for safe, creative commons images and cite them.

Learners can spend a great deal of time searching for images to use in their projects/coursework/etc.
It's important that they are made aware that...
  - not all images they find can be used and/or

Photos for Class is an ideal site for learners to use to find free images they can use and a huge bonus is that Photos for Class automatically adds the required attribution information to the footer of the images that they download.
Photos for Class has, until recently relied on Flickr's library of Creative Commons and public domain images, however Photos for Class has started to include public domain images from Pixabay's safe search.

ClassHook | Educational Clips from Popular Media

ClassHook | Educational Clips from Popular Media | technologies | Scoop.it
Teach your students using their favorite TV shows and movies.
John Dalziel's insight:
ClassHookuses YouTube as a source of videos and can...
  - save Educators time when searching for a video clip to support a point in their lesson plan.
  - also be helpful in finding a video to build a flipped lesson upon.
ClassHook enables educators to search for video clips according to subject and topic.
Most of the video clips found on ClassHook come from television shows and movies.
ClassHook has also introduced a new feature that filters profanity from videos. This new feature is called "profanity skipping" and it does what the name implies. As a video plays back, any profanity in the clip is skipped. Profanity skipping was developed by ClassHook in response to educators who said they had found a clip that would be useful in a lesson except for one or two swear words. ClassHook's profanity skipping feature will let those educators use such clips.
Learn more about ClassHook by watching the video clip at https://www.youtube.com/embed/nfJr3DW1cYE ;
Go on, it must be worth while creating a YouTube playlist to organise the clips found via ClassHook.
