WebRoom: provides all the features required for effective live on-line classes and meetings

WebRoom: provides all the features required for effective live on-line classes and meetings | technologies |
Teach or Meet Live Now
John Dalziel's insight:
Many Educators are looking for ways to host an on-line learning environment, an on-line tutoring session and/or to 'connect and collaborate' with colleagues, the list goes on.
At times all of us could use a free and easy way to create on-line rooms.
Yes you could use Google Hangouts, but, to be fair, more times than not at least one person has trouble signing into the Hangout (Heads-up - the cause is usually found in having multiple Google Accounts open at the same time).
Other virtual 'conference room platforms' can be expensive.
A possible solution to both of those problems is WebRoom which provides all the features required for effective live on-line classes and meetings.
Basically there are three steps...
  - Create a room - just enter your name and email address,
  - Invite Participants - use the invite function, or share the link provided via email, chat or however you like and
  - that's it - Participants join instantly by clicking the link.
As for the technical requirements...
  - Browsers... a current version of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari or Edge
  - Mobile Devices...Android OS 4+ and Chrome application or Android 5+ with a built-in Chrome browser. iOS mobile devices (iPhone, iPad and iPod) with iOS 11 or above and only with Safari browser IMPORTANT!
Heads up - a connection between Safari and Edge browsers, at the time of posting this, can not be established.
Last of all, take a look at Richard Byrne's video clip "How to create a Virtual Conference Room" at ;
This is a "I must try it out" tool!

Zoho Notebook's web clipper is the tool used to save links in the users notebooks.
The web clipper lets users...
  - save links,
  - take screenshots and
  - write notes.
There's also a "clean view" option in the Zoho Notebook web clipper that removes sidebar content from articles that users find and read on the web; that's a big plus in itself!
For an overview of Zoho Notebook's web clipper, watch the video clip at ;
Everything that learners, and/or educators, save in Zoho Notebook will sync across all of the devices on which they use it.
There isn't a limit to the number of devices on which they can use Zoho Notebook.
Zoho Notebook has a very clean design, where notes can be organised into notebooks with customised covers.
NOTE: the first minute of any spoken notes is automatically transcribed to make them easier to later search for in the notebooks.
Pictures and task lists can also be added to a user's notebook.

Talk and Comment - Voice notes anywhere

Talk and Comment - Voice notes anywhere | technologies |
Make voice notes and comments on any site!
John Dalziel's insight:
Our voice is one of the most powerful tools we possess, but, when providing feedback to learners, educators tend to default to writing instead of talking.
Yes, there are definitely times when writing is the way to go, but there are other situations when spoken words can have a dramatic impact.
Talk and Comment is a Chrome extension that allows users to provide voice comments on any site or app.
This is a great way to provide feedback to learners.
This "Talk and Comment" free extension lets users record and send voice notes on all sites (Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Github, Gmail, Google+, Wordpress, ...), in a easy way.
The resulting Voice notes can be played even if others don't have the extension installed.

Applied Digital Skills:- Digital Tools to Help Learners Succeed On-line

Applied Digital Skills:- Digital Tools to Help Learners Succeed On-line | technologies |

Help your learners succeed on-line and prepare for their careers with free digital tools and online lessons from Applied Digital Skills.

John Dalziel's insight:
There are so many digital resources today, so many educators, including myself, who are regularly sharing resources and ideas for teaching, so many ways to focus the learning process on the interests and abilities of learners, that when educators complain that their learners are not engaged, it has to be the time to stop and to look carefully at why this happening.
Educators, need to push their limits, seek new approaches which will stimulate curiosity and an appetite for learning.
Educators need to give learners the space and time to practice, to create and not just consume knowledge to pass exams.
Applied Digital Skills is a free technology curriculum aligned with ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education); it provides free lessons for educators to dip into and use or adapt to their teaching context.
Each lesson indicates the necessary time, level (i.e. who it is most suitable for), a focus on the skills which are meant to be developed, as well as a rubric.
Well worth a closer look and by doing so, helping learners succeed on-line and prepare for their future.

Google Family Link - Manage a Child’s Android Phone

Google Family Link - Manage a Child’s Android Phone | technologies |
Stay in the loop as your child explores on their Android device
John Dalziel's insight:
Heads up parents!
If you would like a way to keep your loved ones safe, especially when they use their phone, then Google's Family Link may be the option you’ve been looking for.
Basically it’s a way to children with a fully capable smartphone that parents can control.
Yes I'm sure we're all aware that Google has a strict age requirement of 13 years or older and, for younger children parents are faced with two options, some choose to...
  - lie about their childrens' age, or
  - disappoint their loved ones, telling them they can’t have their own account.
Mean old Google!
That’s why Google has introduced Family Link.
Family Link is an Android app that allows parents, to set up a Google account for their child under 13 and connect it to their own Google account.
When their child turns 13, the account is all theirs.
In the meantime, parents can manage all aspects of their child’s account.
Parents can...
  - grant access to specific apps and tools,
  - approve paid downloads,
  - monitor screen time,
  - track their location,
  - see what apps they're spending the most time in
...and more.
Even better, it’s completely free.
NOTE: There is a catch, however: it requires the child’s device to have Android Nougat (7.0) or newer. So if parents were looking to give their child one of their old phones, it may not work out — it all depends on how old the said “old” phone really is. Parents can see which version of Android any phone is running by going to Settings > About Phone.
NOTE: It’s also worth mentioning to parents that their child will be able to see of the settings they sets in the app, on their phone, but they won’t be able to change of them. That’s neat.
If I wasn't retired, I'd be encouraging Learning Providers to raise awareness of Google's Family Link to Parents and Guardians.

Typing Pal - On-line Typing/keyboarding skills Program

Typing Pal - On-line Typing/keyboarding skills Program | technologies |
John Dalziel's insight:
Typing is an essential skill for using technology in the Real World but few Learning Providers offer typing courses.
Typing Pal is a valuable tool for individuals to learn typing and keyboarding skills; its three environment levels and customisable texts keep learning relevant to learners' courses and skill levels.
When learners take the initial timed test, it's easy to track their improvement over the Typing Pal course, since the final test is identical.
The Typing Pal course includes a number of motivational tools to keep learners tracking their own progress.
During each lesson, learners can see their...
  - current accuracy percentage,
  - number of mistakes,
  - speed, and
  - progress.
This provides an awareness of how learners are doing within the Typing Pal lesson.
Learners also have access to the video replays of their own exercises to allow them to clearly see where they struggle.
The built-in improvement exercises automatically customise themselves to each user's needs and provide targeted practice.
Educators can also give older learners more control over their goals, helping learners take charge of their own learning.
For Educators, the back end features very powerful learner management tools where settings for groups and activities can be modified.
There are also customisable fonts for learners with special needs, including dyslexia-friendly fonts.
Typing Pal is meant to be used frequently for short durations, getting students to learn and practice their new skills.
Typing Pal's lessons are broken down into small, gradual steps, and learners are encouraged with the award of badges.
  1: Typing Pal isn't free.
2: Visit Typing Pal Online - - to view the options for individuals, rather than learning providers
3: click the link to the Typing Pal Store - - for the costs for individuals e.g. the Windows download version, at the time of posting this was £20.57

Educational Documentaries

Educational Documentaries | technologies |
Empty description
John Dalziel's insight:
Many Educators spend time looking for some good websites that provide curated educational documentaries.
These links feature some options that may be worth a closer look.
These links are to platforms where Educators, and/or Learners, can get access to a plethora of documentaries spanning different topics and subject areas.
Educators can...
  - browse through the wide range of categories on offer,
  - pick appropriate documentaries and
  - share with learners.
The Documentaries are provided with a short written synopsis and an embedded clip usually from popular video hosting sites such as YouTube and Vimeo.
If learning providers block these websites, Educators probably won't be able to watch some documentaries from these sites. The sites are...
  - Documentary Heaven - - over 30 categories from Education and Human Rights to to Science and War
  - Documentary Storm - - educational documentaries from different on-line sources and
  - Free Documentaries - - full-length documentary films free of charge, with no registration needed.

FlipQuiz™  Creating Digital Quizzes

FlipQuiz™  Creating Digital Quizzes | technologies |
John Dalziel's insight:
Many educators use Google forms as their "go to" tool to create different types of quizzes, questionnaires and polls.

For something different...

GoalsOnTrack: App for Goal Setting

GoalsOnTrack: App for Goal Setting | technologies |
GoalsOnTrack is a robust and comprehensive smart goal setting software program that helps you set, track and share goals, manage tasks, track time, build habits, create vision board, keep goal journal, and achieve more success in reaching both personal and business goals.
John Dalziel's insight:
Not all learners are created equal.
Learners that perform well, tend to be those who are self-motivated and who love learning for learning’s sake.
They take notes in lectures, not because they have to but because they want to, and they set themselves goals and hold themselves accountable for meeting them.
However we're also aware that it’s easy to lose focus if they don’t have something to keep them on track.
That’s where GoalsOnTrack comes into play.
The GoalsOnTrack application can be accessed through both the web and through a smartphone application and it’s all about helping learners set and stick to SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely) goals.
Bigger goals can be broken up into smaller chunks so that they’re easier to swallow, and users can also take notes on their goals and their progress or track their progress offline.
NOTE: It isn't FREE - approx £52 a year at the time posting this (Less than £5 a month or 15p per day).
Both apps require an active account via the website.
Not everyone needs to use an app to set and achieve their goals – but most people will at the very least feel some benefit.

GoAnimate: Create Animated Videos for your Learners

GoAnimate: Create Animated Videos for your Learners  | technologies |

Make animated videos on-line for your learners with GoAnimate. Create animated marketing videos, sales videos, explainer videos, training videos and elearning videos. Make video presentations and produce video advertising. Use our powerful animation software to increase the ROI on your video.

John Dalziel's insight:
One of the many new tools for eLearning development is GoAnimate to Add Animation to your eLearning Whether educators want to create...
  - an animated whiteboard video (moving hand draws objects on your screen right before your eyes!), or
  - a more character-based video (animated characters walk, move, talk, and emote),
...GoAnimate makes it possible.
Even for those of us with limited or no drawing skill or knowledge of how to create animation.
Some Educators are integrating GoAnimate clips with screen captures (e.g. created using Captivate or other software).
This can be done by using GoAnimate's Camera Effects to zoom in on the screen of a PC, until the initial image of the screen capture is full size. That's when the GoAnimate video ends and the screen capture starts.
By creating and/or integrating GoAnimate videos within eLearning, Educators can add humour, engagement, and a fun element that learners will love.
But what may be more important to educators is they can publish their projects as fully SCORM-compliant training that can be uploaded to their LMS, with all of the record-keeping and reporting that they may need.
Yes it will take some time but it's well worth giving it a try.

AutoMastery - Google Forms add-on

AutoMastery - Google Forms add-on | technologies |

AutoMastery is a Google Forms Add-On that allows the Form owner to send learners assignments based on their score on a Google Form.

John Dalziel's insight:
As Educators, you'll be aware that...
  - administering a quiz,
  - sorting the scores,
  - then trying to ensure learners get appropriate assignments (personalised Learning), based on the scores,
...takes a lot of time! AutoMastery is a new Google Forms add-on, that automates all of those tasks so practitioners can spend time facilitating and following up with learners who need extra help. The AutoMastery add-on allows users to automatically differentiate assignments for learners based on the score they receive on a Google Forms quiz.
  - set a mastery score and a beginner level score.
Learners who score...
  - at or above mastery will receive a link to an extension activity.
  - at or below the beginner level will receive an assignment that is designed to fit their needs and help them build the necessary skills to move to the progression level.
  - above beginner but below mastery will receive an assignment that is designed to bring them up to the mastery level.
...All assignments will be sent to the learners through an automated email.
NOTE: When installing the AutoMastery add-on, users are likely see a warning message that says the app has not been approved by Google and to only install it if you know and trust the developer. I'm assured this is just a glitch that will be worked out soon!
Once installed, users will need to configure AutoMastery.
During this step users will set the mastery and beginner scores and add the links to the three different assignments they've have selected.
AutoMastery has the potential to be used, by educators, across all subject areas; must be worth trying out.
