GoAnimate: Create Animated Videos for your Learners

GoAnimate: Create Animated Videos for your Learners  | technologies |

Make animated videos on-line for your learners with GoAnimate. Create animated marketing videos, sales videos, explainer videos, training videos and elearning videos. Make video presentations and produce video advertising. Use our powerful animation software to increase the ROI on your video.

John Dalziel's insight:
One of the many new tools for eLearning development is GoAnimate to Add Animation to your eLearning Whether educators want to create...
  - an animated whiteboard video (moving hand draws objects on your screen right before your eyes!), or
  - a more character-based video (animated characters walk, move, talk, and emote),
...GoAnimate makes it possible.
Even for those of us with limited or no drawing skill or knowledge of how to create animation.
Some Educators are integrating GoAnimate clips with screen captures (e.g. created using Captivate or other software).
This can be done by using GoAnimate's Camera Effects to zoom in on the screen of a PC, until the initial image of the screen capture is full size. That's when the GoAnimate video ends and the screen capture starts.
By creating and/or integrating GoAnimate videos within eLearning, Educators can add humour, engagement, and a fun element that learners will love.
But what may be more important to educators is they can publish their projects as fully SCORM-compliant training that can be uploaded to their LMS, with all of the record-keeping and reporting that they may need.
Yes it will take some time but it's well worth giving it a try.

Magisto - Educational Practitioners can use it for microlearning

Magisto - Educational Practitioners can use it for microlearning | technologies |
Magisto online video editor is the easiest and fastest video maker. Make inspiring video stories and business videos in minutes, with Magisto video editing
John Dalziel's insight:
Magisto is a tool for making short marketing videos but Educational Practitioners can use it for microlearning in a workplace in two ways:
  - Making educational videos for courses.
  - getting learners to make videos to revise the material they've learned.
This type of ‘assignment’ is more fun, so learners will be more excited to do it.
Practitioners can use the assignment as a final project, and boost the learners’ motivation by making it a contest for the best or most creative video.
Another worth a closer look.

Planboard - Digital lesson planner

Planboard - Digital lesson planner | technologies |
Get organized and reduce your classroom prep time. Accessible from anywhere to plan lessons, align to curriculum sets, and manage your schedule with ease.
John Dalziel's insight:
Planboard is an organisational tool (website and app) for lesson planning and tracking.
Users start by...
  - creating a free account, then
  - create colour-coded subjects -- which can be further organised into sections if the subject is taught to more than one group, or class, of learners. Then
  - add subjects to a schedule using a built-in calendar.
Creating and organising lessons is the final step; templates are available and editing tools allow users to...
  - embed videos,
  - attach documents,
  - include links to Google documents,
...and more.
Additional features are well worth exploring and using after the basic setup is complete. Curriculum sets can be added to subjects; lessons can be copied, shifted, and exported for collaboration with other educators; and standards can be added to lessons.
Users can sync Planboard with other apps from, including Markboard, Attendance, and Collaborate.
Markboard helps users manage assessment, Attendance tracks learner absences, and Collaborate is a comprehensive sharing tool.
NOTE: There's quite a steep learning curve, and requires quite a lot of setup time. However, Planboard should save educational practitioners time in the long run and reduce the stress of managing course schedules and trying to keep lesson resources organised.
The Tutorial videos do an excellent job of walking users through the features and how to use them.
Download Planboard for...
View and edit your lessons anywhere
Must be worth a closer look.

Portable Apps - Portable software for USB, portable and cloud drives

Portable Apps - Portable software for USB, portable and cloud drives | technologies |
John Dalziel's insight:
After my last post, I was reminded of the frustrations I experienced, in the World of Education, when I couldn't use the software appropriate for many tasks.
Portable apps came to my rescue.
Portable apps are a “lite” version of a software, which can run without being installed on the host computer.
It also doesn’t modify the computer’s configuration information. In other words, users of a Portable app can run it, use it, and no-one will ever know they were there.
Apart from offering me more flexibility and security when I was working on public computers, another good use for portable apps is to keep the number of installed apps, on my laptop, to an absolute minimum.
Installed programs take up space and can cause a computer/laptop etc., to run slower; so the less you have installed the better.
I tend not to install something if there is a portable version available.
Take a closer look the Portable app Directory, that includes apps for...
  - Accessibility
  - Development
  - Education
  - Games
  - Graphics & Pictures
  - Internet
  - Music & Video
  - Office
  - Security and
  - Utilities
...there's currently 300+ apps available.

Turn Off the Lights | For Browser, Desktop and Tablet | technologies |
Turn Off the Lights is a FREE browser extension that allows users to dim everything on their screen except for HTML5 videos they're watching. Get it Now!
John Dalziel's insight:
Turn Off The Lights is a lightweight tool to highlight the video player and darken the rest of a web page.
With a single click on the lamp button, the page will fade to dark and automatically focus on the video, so users can watch the videos as if they were in the cinema.
By clicking on the lamp button again, the page will return to normal.
Turn Off the Lights is a lightweight and useful add-in designed for a more comfortable watching experience.
It works for many video sites such as YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, twitch, Hulu, Facebook, Metacafe, YouKu, HTML5 etc.
Visit for a quick overview.
Note: I've found that if there isn't a video on a website, Turn Off The Lights can be used to black out the whole screen; again useful during presentations - give it a go! etc.

Watch Frame by Frame - Watch YouTube & Vimeo videos frame by frame

Watch Frame by Frame - Watch YouTube & Vimeo videos frame by frame  | technologies |
Watch Frame by Frame allows you to watch YouTube and Vimeo videos frame by frame and in slow motion.
John Dalziel's insight:
Video Clips are being used more and more within teaching and learning and there are many ways to watch on-line videos.
'Watch Frame by Frame' enables users to watch YouTube or Vimeo Video Clips in slow motion and/or frame-by-frame. Viewing videos at slower than usual speed can help learners catch things they tend to miss at normal speed.
Users just need to...
  - type (or paste) in the video link from YouTube or Vimeo and
  - choose the appropriate settings.
There are four controls users can tweak.
1: Next to the frame-by-frame playback controls there is a clock which can be toggled to show the movement of frames.
2 - 4: allow users to set the steps at a set speed and frames per second.
Practitioners can share links with their learners - e.g. - but may also wish to suggest the settings to use when viewing. NOTE: I'm sure you are aware that YouTube does already have playback speed settings hidden in plain sight.
  - Click the Settings icon in the lower-right corner of the playback window (the little cog symbol).
  - Select Speed from the pop-up overlay which appears.
  - Choose 0.25 or 0.5 for slow speeds. You can also speed it up by choosing a higher speed.
Watch Frame by Frame is a useful tool to enhance visual learning!

ViewedIt - Screen, Voice and Webcam Recorder for Practitioners who use Google Chrome and/or Chromebooks

ViewedIt - Screen, Voice and Webcam Recorder for Practitioners who use Google Chrome and/or Chromebooks | technologies |
Video for All
John Dalziel's insight:
ViewedIt is a free Chrome extension that makes it quick and easy to create and share screencast videos.
ViewedIt could be a good screencasting tool for teachers who use Chromebooks and want to share tutorial videos with their learners.
Being able to track when learners watch their videos is an added bonus.
With the extension installed users can record their entire screen or just one window tab.
ViewedIt will let users record themselves with their webcam as well.
To record on ViewedIt users simply have to...
  - click the extension icon
  - choose what they want to record.
...when they're done recording (max time of 1 hour per video), their video is automatically stored on ViewedIt.
From ViewedIt users can share their video via email and social media.
If they choose to share via email, they will be able to track who watched their video and the percentage of the video they watched.
There is no limit to the number of videos users can record.
NOTE : To be honest, ViewedIt has the following shortcomings...
  - it doesn't let users download their videos and
  - it doesn't let users upload their videos to YouTube or other platforms.
Still worth a closer look, especially if practitioners are engaging with "Flipped Learning" and/or only have Chromebooks.

iSLCollective video quiz maker - Video lessons

iSLCollective video quiz maker - Video lessons | technologies |
John Dalziel's insight:
The iSLCollective video quiz maker is a 'free web-based tool that allows Education Practitioners to create interactive video quizzes around YouTube and Vimeo videos.
This is how it works, either...
  - Register and login (It's FREE)
  - choose videos from YouTube or Vimeo.
  - write questions that will pop up throughout the video.
 - can also add a lesson plan, vocabulary list, and discussion questions. or...
There is also an option for Practitioners to...
  - search for already-made video quizzes in the iSLCollective library.
  - tailor the quiz questions to meet the needs of their learners'.
Once the new or tailored video quiz is ready, Practitioners...
  - click on ‘publish’ and
  - provide data about the video such as title, summary, lesson type, level, etc.
Video quizzes created through iSLCollective provide different ‘play mode’ options.
Learners can...
  - watch the video without quiz,
  - play video quiz in interactive mode,
  - use the Casino game mode, or
  - play it in non-interactive mode.
There are several reasons why Practitioners would want to try out iSLCollective in their learning environments.
  - the quizzes allow Practitioners to focus on their learners during class, rather than handling the video.
  - the iSLCollective video quiz maker gives them a break from keeping track of video pauses, printing the questions beforehand, etc., and
  - the interactivity and gamification adds playfulness to video work
  - with various play modes (e.g. the classic Casino game where you bet on the right answer) and features like the tapping game where students tap on objects seen in the paused video screen.
It’s a great homework/flipped learning tool as well!
