Dictionary of Numbers, Putting numbers in human terms.

Dictionary of Numbers, Putting numbers in human terms. | technologies | Scoop.it
John Dalziel's insight:

Dictionary of Numbers – is a Google Chrome extension that tries to make sense of numbers learners encounter on the internet by giving them a description of that number in human terms.
Like a dictionary describes words they don’t know in terms they do, Dictionary of Numbers puts quantities they’re unfamiliar with in terms they can understand.
Ideal for Functional Maths Learners

subtangent.com - Maths - Games - Numbers & Letters

subtangent.com - Maths - Games - Numbers & Letters | technologies | Scoop.it
Subtangent is a website well worth a visit; it provides several flash games including a few which mimic the letters and the numbers rounds from the Countdown TV show.
The Subtangent website was produced by Duncan Keith, a Maths teacher here in England (UK).
For...
• Literacy lessons – choose a mixture of vowels and consonants and then see who can make the longest word from the letters provided.
• Maths lessons – see who can get the closest to the target number using combinations of numbers provided. This is a great mental warm up activity.
Games, like this can be played online or downloaded for offline use.
Note: There are other games on the Subtangent site – however some can now only be played offline to reduce site traffic – but they are easy to download and play.

Nationally (UK) developed Skills for Life resources

Nationally (UK) developed Skills for Life resources | technologies | Scoop.it
John Dalziel's insight:

These resources were developed over the period 2001 to 2010, to support the national Skills for Life Strategy and other Skills for Life developments. The documents and other resources were held on the Readwriteplus website which has been closed for some time.
Some of the material was developed some time ago and will be of interest for research, however the teaching and learning materials (generic Skills for Life teaching and learning materials, embedded learning materials, Skilled for Health materials, interactive materials) and the assessment materials (ESOL initial assessment, diagnostic assessment) remain current.
These materials will be of interest to a wide range of teachers in all settings, including Skills for Life, functional skills and key skills teaching and learning. Vocational, employability and community teachers will find useful resources in the embedded learning materials. All materials are downloadable and free of charge.

MATHS4US: Learning Maths Online

MATHS4US: Learning Maths Online | technologies | Scoop.it
John Dalziel's insight:

The Maths4Us initiative is supported by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, and driven forward by NIACE and a number of key partner organisations across the public and private sector.
Maths is used every day, by everyone. It is crucial in completing daily tasks like shopping and cooking, gaining employment and supporting children with their homework. The list goes on.
Many learners are unaware that they already use maths or mistakenly thinking that learning maths as an adult will be the same as learning it at school. (Sadly with some Learning Providers that will be the case; not you I'm sure!)
The partners have recruited maths champions and created a number of resources to support learners in developing and improving their maths skills.
