Check out Science Journal-- a digital science notebook to inspire kids and adults explore the world around them using sensors and data!
John Dalziel's insight:
Science Journal is the free digital science notebook by Google.
The "Getting Started" activities helps users become familiar with using the sensors & interpreting graphs created in the app.
There are two versions of Science Journal available...
With the Science Journal app users can:
  • measure light, sound, acceleration, air pressure and more using a device's built-in sensors.
  • take notes and photos to document their STEM/STEAM experiments
  • Connect to external sensors using select Bluetooth-enabled Arduino devices.
  • Create automated triggers for recording data and taking notes.
  • Use sonification to hear the movement of their graphs.
Well worth a closer look and trial/Test!

List of academic databases and search engines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

List of academic databases and search engines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This page contains a representative list of major databases and search engines useful in an academic setting for finding and accessing articles in academic journals, repositories, archives, or other collections of scientific and other articles.

Empty description
John Dalziel's insight:
I know there are mixed feelings in the 'World of Education when Wikipedia is mentioned but...
Wikipedia has this comprehensive list of major academic databases and search engines which learners and/or practitioners will find useful, in their academic setting, for finding and accessing articles in...
♥ academic journals,
♥ repositories and/or
♥ archives,
...or other collections of scientific and other articles.
The list has more than 50 titles, neatly organised and based on the discipline they target.
From World Wide Science to Aerospace, almost all disciplines are covered.
These search engines are especially useful for practitioners, educators, and academic researchers looking for a quick access to articles published in academic journals and other scientific publications.
These kind of documents and articles do not normally have a high visibility in normal search engines.
You might want to bookmark the page and keep it handy to use whenever needs be.

Penzu

Penzu | technologies | Scoop.it
Free personal journal and online diary.
John Dalziel's insight:

With a simple design and paper-like interface, Penzu is extremely intuitive and easy to use.
Keeping a daily diary with Penzu couldn't be easier. Users can write at any time from anywhere.
Reflective Journals help learners to "Get Smarter" - Keeping a journal or diary can not only boost learners' "working memory" but their grades too.
The act of writing can be extremely therapeutic, especially when writing about thoughts that they don't share with others.
Questions to consider daily could include...
   - What did I do today?
   - Did I have any strong feelings, good or bad, about my day?
   - What would I like to remember (or forget)?
   - Do I remember feeling this way before?
   - If my day could have gone better or worse, how might it have unfolded?

DOAJ -- Directory of Open Access Journals | technologies | Scoop.it
John Dalziel's insight:

If learners don’t have access to a "college library" they should try this Directory of Open Access Journals. They may be surprised at how many journals provide free access. For focused research or simple browsing, there’s much to learn via this site.

GoalsOnTrack: App for Goal Setting

GoalsOnTrack: App for Goal Setting | technologies | Scoop.it
GoalsOnTrack is a robust and comprehensive smart goal setting software program that helps you set, track and share goals, manage tasks, track time, build habits, create vision board, keep goal journal, and achieve more success in reaching both personal and business goals.
John Dalziel's insight:
Not all learners are created equal.
Learners that perform well, tend to be those who are self-motivated and who love learning for learning’s sake.
They take notes in lectures, not because they have to but because they want to, and they set themselves goals and hold themselves accountable for meeting them.
However we're also aware that it’s easy to lose focus if they don’t have something to keep them on track.
That’s where GoalsOnTrack comes into play.
The GoalsOnTrack application can be accessed through both the web and through a smartphone application and it’s all about helping learners set and stick to SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely) goals.
Bigger goals can be broken up into smaller chunks so that they’re easier to swallow, and users can also take notes on their goals and their progress or track their progress offline.
NOTE: It isn't FREE - approx £52 a year at the time posting this (Less than £5 a month or 15p per day).
Both apps require an active account via the website.
Not everyone needs to use an app to set and achieve their goals – but most people will at the very least feel some benefit.

Science Journal App - a digital science notebook to inspire learners to explore the world around them

Science Journal App - a digital science notebook to inspire learners to explore the world around them | technologies | Scoop.it
Check out Science Journal-- a digital science notebook to inspire kids and adults explore the world around them using sensors and data!
John Dalziel's insight:
The "Science Journal" app, currently available for Android users only, allows users to gather data from the world around them. The on-board sensors of a users phone helps them collect, analyse and conduct experiments on the world around them; turning a phone into 'a pocket science laboratory' to measure...
► light,
► motion,
► sound
 ...and more.
Science Journal empowers users with a set of built-in features that turns it into a lab notebook.
Users can use these features to...
► record their data,
► visualise their data into charts and diagrams,
► take notes including voice notes,
► organise their data into projects,
► collect data in multiple trials,
► annotate and explore their results
...and much more.
Science Journal has also partnered with Exploratorium to provide users with third party tools and materials to utilise in different science experiments.
There is also an activity section ( ideal for STEM Practitioners) featuring a variety of activities for learners (ages 10 and up) to help them tap into the educational potential of Science Journal. Each activity comes with a set of instructions and guidelines to print out and use with learners.
