Oculus Rift, three Kinects effectively bring an entire human body into a virtual world | ExtremeTech

Oculus Rift, three Kinects effectively bring an entire human body into a virtual world | ExtremeTech | Technologies for Embodied Learning Experiences | Scoop.it
Ever wanted to put yourself inside of a video game? It’s now possible to dynamically represent your entire body inside of a virtual world, and this monumental task can be accomplished with off-the-shelf hardware. With three first-gen Kinects and an Oculus Rift dev kit, a developer by the name of Oliver Kreylos has hacked together a true VR prototype that actually makes you feel like you’re in a computer-generated world.

By placing three Kinect sensors in an equilateral triangle around his room, Kreylos is able to generate a live 3D model of his body from the raw video data. By sidestepping the Kinect’s processor-intensive skeletal reconstruction, this visual representation is extremely low-latency. When you put on your Oculus Rift and hold your hand to your face, Kreylos claims that your brain immediately registers the limb as your own.

Virtual Nose Keeps Gamers From Feeling Sick

Virtual Nose Keeps Gamers From Feeling Sick | Technologies for Embodied Learning Experiences | Scoop.it
Simulator sickness—which often induces vertigo and even nausea—often afflicts players of virtual reality games, but inserting a “virtual nose” into the picture may be a way to lessen the queasiness.

Various physiological systems govern the onset of simulator sickness: an overall sense of touch and position, or the somatosensory system; liquid-filled tubes in the ear called the vestibular system; and the oculumotor system, or muscles that control eye movements.

Archaeologists See and Smell the Past With Augmented Reality

Archaeologist Stuart Eve has an augmented-reality app under development called Dead Men’s Eyes that not only visually recreates ancient ruins, but also gives you a sense of what they smelled and sounded like. It uses a smartphone, an open-source microcontroller, and a video game development software. He recreates a landscape in a coordinate-based mapping program and using video-game building software, he created the structures and placed them into their proper locations on the map.
