Future technology in the next five years will impact on everything from mobile devices and applications, social networking and companies should be ready for all these massive changes.

This article stated that “30 billion pieces of content were added to Facebook in the past month worldwide.  IP traffic will quadruple by 2015.  In 1 day more than 2 billion videos were watched on YouTube.  The average teen sends 4762 text messages a month and in 1 month 32 billion searches were performed”.  These are amazing figures and what will happen in the next five years?

They suggest the big trends will be in: Media Tablets, Application and interfaces, Social User experiences, App Stores and Marketplace, The Internet, Next Gen Analytics, Big Data, In Memory Computing and extremely low energy servers, Cloud Computing.  All these add up to very interesting times in the future.

Dion Hinchcliffe speaks about the speed technology is developing and especially after the recovery from the financial downturn over the past few years.  He suggests the five major areas will be: User Experience, IT delivery, Information and Communication, Innovation and Usage model and data.

He describes the widespread use of smart phones and tablets. How social media has surpassed all expectations and are used everyday to keep in contact with each other.  Companies are now using social media as a primary source for contact.  He states “Cloud computing is still felt as unsafe and until information can be seamlessly transferred back and forth between company’s private cloud and public cloud, it will be held back until it has improved”.

Consumerization of IT and Big Data are 2 other enterprises that are discussed in detail.  IT departments must be ready and willing to see these advancements and ideas and take them on with enthusiasm.

Fisch, McLeod, and Bronman in 2005 gave an indepth and remarkable essay on technology trends and where we are heading in the 21st century.

Discussed in great detail are population grown, health and well being, digital trends and the hype cycle for emerging technologies.  They have used and built on a variety of sources to obtain this data.

The conclusion was that there are changes both welcome and unwelcome and the need for schools to change curriculum to address the challenges and trends for the future.
