Verizon Weighs Sports Gambling as Legalization Nears | Eben Novy-Williams & Scott Moritz | Forbes.com | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it

Verizon Communications Inc. is considering entering the multibillion-dollar market for sports betting, which could become legal in the U.S. before the year is out, according to people familiar with the matter.

The New York-based phone giant, which last year bought Yahoo and its popular sports fantasy business, has been meeting with experts and consultants to assess the potential for a sports-focused online gambling venture if the laws in the U.S. change, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private information. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to issue a decision early this year in a case that challenges the current federal prohibition on sports gambling.

A company hacked a Tesla so it drives on hydrogen | Kyree Leary | Futurism.com | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it

The Tesla model S is one of the most renowned electric vehicles on the market. The cheapest, 75D model, boasts an impressive range of 416 km (259 miles), while the 100D and P100D have ranges of 539 km (335 miles) and 506 km (315 miles), respectively. What if you wanted your Model S to go farther? Sure, you could stop and charge it at one of Tesla’s supercharger stations, but what if you didn’t have to stop and could instead drive for, say, another 500-600 km? All it would take is a little hydrogen.

As reported by The Drive, a gas supplier in the Netherlands called Holthausen Group managed to boost the maximum range of Tesla’s Model S by essentially hacking in a hydrogen power source. The company’s success at making an electric- and hydrogen-powered Tesla makes them the first in the world to do so. They even gave it an appropriate name: Project Hesla.

#Morality #algorithm lets machines cooperate and compromise better than humans #Asimov

#Morality #algorithm lets machines cooperate and compromise better than humans #Asimov  | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it
Over the past year, it's become pretty clear that machines can now beat us in many straightforward zero-sum games. A new study from an international team of computer scientists set out to develop a new type of game-playing algorithm – one that can play games that rely on traits like cooperation and compromise – and the researchers have found that machines can already deploy those characteristics better than humans.

Chess, Go and Poker are all adversarial games where two or more players are in conflict with each other. Games such as these offer clear milestones to gauge the progress of AI development, allowing humans to be pitted against computers with a tangible winner. But many real-world scenarios that AI will ultimately operate in require more complex, cooperative long term relationships between humans and machines.

"The end goal is that we understand the mathematics behind cooperation with people and what attributes artificial intelligence needs to develop social skills," says lead author on the new study Jacob Crandall. "AI needs to be able to respond to us and articulate what it's doing. It has to be able to interact with other people."

Keith Ramos's curator insight, January 23, 1:54 PM
As time progresses, it seems as if machines ans humans are constantly competing, and according to this article, Artificial Intelligence is gaining on people. This article goes into detail about how a program called “S#” has the ability to cooperate in social interactions better than a human does. The program was tested throughout a series of human-human, machine-machine, and human-machine interactions via video games. The results showed that the interactions that consisted of machine-machine interactions were most sucessful, while the human-machine interactions placed second, and the human-human interactions scored lowest in cooperation. Jacob Crindalls, lead author of the study stated that the goal of the study is “that we understand the mathematics behind cooperation with people and what attributes artificial intelligence needs to develop social skills.” This article is interesting to see especially during a time like today where technology is constantly making advances, and it raises questions as to whether technology may fully surpass human intelligence altogether.

RAVEN: The source’s reputation comes from a university study conducted by Brigham Young University. The ability to observe rests in the experimenter’s perspectives, as well as the expertise which comes from those behind the studies such as Jacob Crindalls, who is the lead author of the study.

Battle of the Classrooms: Apple, Google, Microsoft Vie for K-12 Market - EdSurge News | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it

It’s terribly confusing, but perhaps no coincidence, that three of the world’s most prominent consumer technology companies—Apple, Google, Microsoft—each boast a “Classroom” tool aimed at K-12 educators and students. After all, what better way to secure a foothold in the market than impressing one’s brand to future consumers at a young age?

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

I remember when Bill Gates lost a law suit. His answer to it was to give computers to schools instead of paying a cash fine if I remember correctly. At the time Mac was king of schools...after that mac was never king again in schools. Gates is also behind to push to divert public tax dollars to privatize education. The Walton family also is seeking to turn education into venture investment profits.
