Local TV broadcasters have shifted into high gear with digital advertising efforts, driving an estimated all-time high of nearly $3 billion in new ad revenue for stations this year, according to new research commissioned by the Television Bureau of Advertising. The Borrell study encompassed 815 stations and reports that broadcasters grew their digital revenue 15% last year.

The StormPins weather crowdsourcing app turns viewers into “junior meteorologists” by letting them mark, or “pin,” severe weather, as well as the damage it leaves behind, with photos and video on neighborhood maps so other folks know what’s heading their way. Emily Barr, CEO of Graham Media, is such a big believer in StormPins that the company invested in the app. “It really allows local television stations to build a kind of sense of community and reinforce the idea that viewers get to contribute.”

Radio Revenue Down 3% As Spot Declines | NetNewsCheck.com

Radio's Q2 '14 revenue performance was moderate, down 3% from the same period last year based on diminished Spot activity, the Radio Advertising Bureau’s Q2 reports. Spot declined 5%, tempering respective gains of 13% and 9% from the Off-Air and Digital sectors and flat Network spending. Q2 represents the third consecutive quarter in which radio has seen double-digit growth in Off-Air revenue. First-Half results were flat (-1% overall) as double-digit increases in Off-Air (+15%) and Digital (+12%) helped offset 3% dips in both Spot and Network.

Gannett Co. today announced its plan to create two publicly traded companies — one exclusively focused on its broadcasting and digital businesses, and the other on its publishing business. Gannett has also signed a definitive agreement to acquire full ownership of Cars.com, one of the leading digital companies in the automotive space. Under the agreement, Gannett will acquire the 73% interest it does not already own in Classified Ventures LLC, which owns Cars.com, for $1.8 billion in cash.
