UNESCO Launches Five Laws of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) — @joycevalenza NeverEndingSearch | Teaching with Technology for PreService Teachers | Scoop.it
This week UNESCO launched a framework illustrating its Five Laws of Media and Information Literacy (MIL).
This global strategy marries the large, but often separated, disciplines of information literacy and media literacy and creates a common vocabulary for folks in multiple areas of knowledge to engage in conversation. It also positions these critical literacies as a combined set of competencies–knowledge, skills and attitudes–central for living and working in our world today.

8 digital life skills all children need – and a plan for teaching them

8 digital life skills all children need – and a plan for teaching them | Teaching with Technology for PreService Teachers | Scoop.it
Educators tend to think children will pick up these skills by themselves or that these skills should be nurtured at home. However, due to the digital generation gap, with generation Z being the first to truly grow up in the era of smartphones and social media, neither parents nor teachers know how to adequately equip children with these skills.

Currently, digital skills are an essential part of a comprehensive education framework. This article explains the importance of the use technology and the possible risk that the learners could have during the digital age. Also the article provide eight digital citizenship skills which can lower the risk of the use of technology such as digital citizen identity, screen time management, cyberbullying management, cybersecurity management, privacy management, critical thinking, digital footprints and digital empathy. The digital citizenship should be fomented by parents in their homes, teachers in their classes, and leaders in their communities. Finally, the article conclude that "national leaders need to understand the importance of digital citizenship as the foundation of digital intelligence."
Sheryl Nienhaus's curator insight, October 21, 2016 9:27 PM

Students need to learn 8 digital skills to become work ready when they graduate into the world of work.  The article has a nice colorful chart that identifies and defines the 8 skills. It is a good read for teachers. As a building principal, I would like to have the Leadership Team consider including these 8 skills into our k-5 curriculum.

Alejandro Lopez laverde's curator insight, February 16, 2017 1:01 PM

We sometimes as time goes by tend to think that digital skills among children are soemthing natural and we take them for granted; however, it is important to consider that there are social, cognitive and geographical differences among children and this may enhance or constraint the tecnological skills they should develop.

Gaming and Coding as most of us know is becoming a more regularly integrated part of education to promote learning, but why? Advanced thinking skills are needed to learn programing, think of all of the careers available with this requirement. Based on starting this integrating in education to students at a young age in the form of a games promotes this stimulating thought process. When incorporating content or the knowledge of an activity in a technological format it reduces the lack of interest and promotes it. While some look at it as a fun activity, other see it as a contest, either way, the students are engaged and learning the foundation of a concept that can land them admired skills. A pretty well-reasoned, fundamental thought process for most knowledge work research.  This serves as an even better backward (there-to-here) model to guide the core research workflow process automation  a knowledge worker may want to devise, install.  Think work product-informed -> DevonThink structures -> DevonAgent w/'Active Filtered' automated searches.  The most important drivers here are - 'ethical' - (more than just multiple sources, a stage needs to be added at the work product stage to provide authenticity) and - 'bias' -  (a post automated search,  subsequent manual search for corroborating items selection to provide authority).

36 Core Teacher Apps For Inquiry Learning With iPads - TeachThought

36 Core Teacher Apps For Inquiry Learning With iPads - TeachThought | Teaching with Technology for PreService Teachers | Scoop.it

"The interest in inquiry-based learning seems to ebb and flow based on–well, it’s not clear why it ever ebbs.

In short, it is a student-centered, Constructivist approach to learning that requires critical thinking, and benefits from technology, collaboration, resourcefulness, and other modern learning skills that never seem to fall out of favor themselves.

Regardless, St Oliver Plunkett Primary School has put together two very useful images that can help you populate your iPad–or classroom of iPads–with apps that support both inquiry-based learning (the second image below), and a more general approach to pedagogy based on Apple’s uber-popular tablet (the top image)."

Another delve into the use of Apps in inquiry learning that further cements my train of thinking that the most effective way for TLs to support Inquiry learning with technology is by providing apps as support resources. Whilst incredible short and most just a preface for the attached pair of graphics it dos draw the connection that Inquiry learning is student-centred and aims to promote collaboration, resourcefulness, creativity and question asking as modern learning skills. The 1st graphic breaks educational apps into potential applications such as Search Engine, Scrapbooking, communication and multimodal. The 2nd graphic is potentially more useful as it breaks apps into phases of inquiry: Tune In, Collect/Curate and Synthesise. The apps are also identified on the left as teacher apps for guiding, facilitating and scaffolding use, whereas the left are students apps for problem solving, critical thinking, creating, collaborating and communicating.

Needless to mention that concept map apps are also great for taking visual notes and capturing thoughts on the go. President Obama publically identified critical thinking as a crucial 21st-century skill that learners of all ages need to master to be successful in both the educational arena and the ever-evolving global economy. Adding in the advice of old John Dewey, we see how learning experiences that stimulate thinking by having students engage in creating meaning out of a variety of facts, scenarios, and variables puts the learner in the center of the learning process.
