Advent of Google means we must rethink our approach to education

Advent of Google means we must rethink our approach to education | Tech in teaching | Scoop.it

Would a person with good handwriting, spelling and grammar and instant recall of multiplication tables be considered a better candidate for a job than, say, one who knows how to configure a peer-to-peer network of devices, set up an organisation-wide Google calendar and find out where the most reliable sources of venture capital are, I wonder? The former set of skills are taught in schools, the latter are not.

We have a romantic attachment to skills from the past. Longhand multiplication of numbers using paper and pencil is considered a worthy intellectual achievement. Using a mobile phone to multiply is not. But to the people who invented it, longhand multiplication was just a convenient technology. I don't think they attached any other emotions to it. We do, and it is still taught as a celebration of the human intellect. The algorithms that make Google possible are not taught to children. Instead, they are told: "Google is full of junk."

A great tutoriel on creating captions for movies with iBooks.

I haven't tried this out, but it might be useful.

Frank Lowney's comment, June 22, 2013 5:26 PM
Movie Captioner also supports SRT subtitles which, IMHO, are superior to SCC as used here. Now that iBooks Author no longer deletes extra tracks, you can use soft subtitles. In addition to a better appearance, you can have multiple soft subtitle tracks to support multiple languages. These can be coordinated with multiple alternate audio tracks to support multiple languages and the visually impaired as well.

The Truth About Kids And Social Media

The Truth About Kids And Social Media | Tech in teaching | Scoop.it

Amy Jo Martin:  "According to a recent study, 78% of parents helped create their children’s Facebook pages, and 7.5 million users are under the age of 13. The way your kids use social today will shape their future. It's time for everyone to get educated on how--and how not--to live online."

Building brands is a lot like leaving legacies. What does it mean? Do we have the luxury of thinking we have that much control or will there be features that allow us to be dishonest with brand building?

Deanya Lattimore Schempp's curator insight, May 28, 2013 9:57 AM

Boy are these kids going to be mad at their parents by the time they're 20-somethings...  "Why didn't you protect us?"  they will ask.  "Because we didn't know better," their parents will say.

Putting a kid on the internet without knowing anything about how cookies and cache and logins and TOSs work is like handing them a handgun or putting them behind the wheel of a running car and then leaving.

15 Mistakes You’re Probably Making With Technology In Learning

While it clearly is able to provide access to peers, audiences, resources, and data, it also can be awkward, problematic, distracting, performing more strongly as a barrier to understand than anything else. Why this happens also isn’t clear, but there are some common patterns and missteps to look for while designing or evaluating a learning process.
