At the end of each school year, I ask my students to select several different writing assignments produced throughout the year and edit those pieces to reflect their current ability.
M.Brown's insight:

Here a teacher describes a digital based activity she gets her students to do - creating a digital portfolio of their work throughout the year by making a website. The process includes taking essays from throughout the year and editing them at the end of the year based on their now increased development and ability. 

 

This activity would work really well in Media Studies, for students to curate and present their work throughout the year (which will include a mixture of work from video projects, to blogs and essays). 

 

This would also work in many other subject areas.
