Raph Svensen's curator insight, May 11, 2017 3:40 AM

This article reports on a tactic the opposition Syrian National Coalition used a number of years ago to educate the rebels on international law and human rights, in an attempt to stamp out the use of human shields, child soldiers, chemical weapons and sexual violence among the fighters. This tactic involved the use of simple images and videos in the form of cartoons, to effectively deliver a message to all fighters, including those who couldn’t read.

I found this to be an insightful article in illustrating the powerfulness of a simple cartoon to influence a vast majority of people, and for such a sensitive issue as human brutality. As combatting the use of child soldiers was one of the human rights violations that the opposition wanted to target, I thought that this article would be a great platform for students to develop their own campaign on the continuing use of child soldiers worldwide, using a medium as simple as an image or comic. Many of these child soldiers are the same age as the students in my class and by bringing in international law and the United Nations, it would be a great topic to explore in my subject areas of Legal Studies and HASS. My idea is to develop a series of learning experiences that encourages the students to educate others on the campaign against the use of child soldiers, using originally designed images and comics. Due to the sensitivity of the content, I feel that the appropriate year level for this learning sequence would be year 10, 11 or 12.
