Don't Be Hard to Get Along With

Don't Be Hard to Get Along With | Teaching in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Why do faculty members insist on rigid rules to prepare students for the "real" world when that world is characterized by accommodation?

I am an adjunct English instructor who works full time for a state agency with an academic-assistance program. You know how those programs work: Employees pay for college courses and then get reimbursed for the tuition. Some people obtain entire degrees that way. I'm one of them.

When we are implacable as faculty members, we are not teaching our students how the world works. We are just being jerks.

Designing the Wheel: Built-in Instructional Technology

Designing the Wheel: Built-in Instructional Technology | Teaching in Higher Education | Scoop.it
EDUCAUSE Review Online

Most faculty members are not taught a systematic process to course design and, despite their subject expertise, might lack background in learning theory.Faculty can best adopt educational technology while designing or redesigning their course rather than retrofitting an existing course to include technology.A course design model can include practical application of theories, including best practices for instructional technology use.

TP Msg. #1272 To MOOC or Not?

Distance education can also play a part in saving money, but the real question for MOOCs is whether they can also deliver effective education. MOOCs fit well with competency-based education, which makes no distinction between knowledge obtained from an online course or through prior learning. A pioneer of this concept is Excelsior College. Begun in 1971 as Regents College, part of the State University of New York, it was the first U.S. college to award degrees based on proof of prior learning. The school became an independent nonprofit in 2001 and gained its current name.

Teaching a Domain of One's Own with Reclaim Hosting | Teaching in Higher Education | Scoop.it

One of the many things I’m excited about this semester is a new seminar called Hacking, Remixing, and Design. I’m trying a bunch of new ideas, including students registering their own web domains, which they’ll use as home bases for the various digital projects we work on throughout the semester. The idea of a domain of one’s own is nothing new—the University of Mary Washington has had a domain program for students for several years now. What’s new is the service I’m using:Reclaim Hosting.

  • WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

The  key factors are: Learners’ age, back ground knowledge, the purpose of learning, the learners’ circumstances (employed, students, unemployed, etc…)

  • DO YOU HAVE THE COURSE CURRICULUM?

In many cases the course curriculum does exist, for example: National Curriculum, University course modules , In-house corporate training.

  • WHAT EXTERNAL PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS NEED TO BE MET?

All external examination bodies provide an exam guide or syllabus which you have to insure your course will address them.

  • WHAT IS THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT?

Would your learners attend any face to face classes? Do they access their course from home, work, or college? Do they work as a group or individuals?
