Disruptions: More Connected, Yet More Alone

Disruptions: More Connected, Yet More Alone | Teaching Business Communication and Workplace Issues | Scoop.it
A YouTube video about pervasive smartphone use may have landed at a moment when people start questioning if something has gone too far and start doing something about it.
Bovee & Thill's Online Business Communication Magazines's insight:

This two-minute video has been viewed more than 15 million times.

The woman in the video stares silently while her boyfriend pays no mind and checks his smartphone. The subsequent scenes follow the woman through a day that is downright dystopian: people ignore her as they stare at their phones during lunch, at a concert, while bowling, and at a birthday party. (Even the birthday boy is recording the party on his phone.)

How to Be an Optimist Without Being a Fool | Teaching Business Communication and Workplace Issues | Scoop.it

The first step is to "get happy."
Bovee & Thill's Online Business Communication Magazines's insight:

Our diary study revealed a definitive connection between positive emotion and creativity. We looked at specific emotions as well as overall mood (the aggregate of a person’s positive and negative emotions during the day).

Overall, the more positive a person’s mood on a given day, the more creative thinking he or she did that day. Six Dramatic Changes That Are Affecting Business Communication Instruction

The teaching of business communication is undergoing a transformation because of six dramatic changes that are explained in this video.

These factors shape a different workplace in the 21st century and require students to learn new and better ways to communicate.

For example, the trend away from the old communication model as a monologue, as in a typical sales letter, to the new communication model as a dialogue, such as on Facebook business page, is not a fad. It's a fundamental shift in the way we communicate. Companies are no longer in control of their messages and must adapt to a world in which customers and other stakeholders demand to participate in and influence the conversation.

Absolutely!!! The only people who thrive in these environments are those who focus easily and generally don't pay much attention to other people. Put a "people person" in this environment and they will experience chaos.
